I live on Canvey Island, which is below sea level in the Thames estuary. There are also oil refineries & gas terminals here. If there is a risk of the Thames flooding, the Thames barrier will be closed and this island will be washed away!! Here is some info about Canvey (where many people dies in the floods of 1953) [link to en.wikipedia.org] You got nothing to worry about this time, the Thames is flooding from inland heading out, not from a storm surge heading in. All that rain has got to go somewhere, if they shut the barrier they will flood London. So I'm quite sure that is not on the agenda. Hmm, if it's flooding from inland, that means down the river from London, coming this way. If the barrier is closed, this will be to STOP london from flooding and create a surge of water down stream straight at us The barrier is passed London, so closing it will trap the water here, the barrier is for storm surges, are you talking about some other barrier that diverts water from the Thames before London? |

The barrier is in London, situated outside the City of London and is designed to protect the City - big banks, parliament, etc. If closed, the City will be protected at the cost of all areas east of the barrier |
