Italians? No way. Spartans were Greek first of all. You can make an argument for the Romans but the Romans aren't "Italian". After the Romans fell Italy was flooded by Northern Germanic tribes. Greeks also attacked from the East and Muslims from the South. The modern Italians are a mix of all these. They aren't Roman anymore.

Just look at the last century to see the "Italian" Warrior. WW2 is the best example. The mighty Italian army invades the great nation of Ethiopia and superpower Albania. Then the might race of Italian warriors decides they want to invade Egypt and promptly get routed by the Brits. So Germany had to help them the rest of the war. Then once the tide turn the Italians turned as well and switched sides.

So Italians are far from mighty warriors.

I don't think it's possible to pick a single race. There are so many factors that go into play. The nation the race belonged to and the technology of that nation for one. Pound for pound though I think the German/Scandinavian warriors of ancient time were probably the best. Even the Romans were scared of them. Ceaser himself used German cavalry as his personal guard because they were so ferocious. They were much bigger then the Romans at the time. The problem is the Romans were much more organized and had better technology. So again it depends on what factors you take into account.

and out of the Germanic races the Saxons were the top dogs combine them with the british celt(WHEN YOU CONSIDER CEASAR TOOK 2 YEARS TO OWN GAUL, THEN IT TOOK 22 YEARS FOR ROME TO SUBDUE THE BRITISH TRIBES BUT NEVER COMPLETELY SUBDUE THE WHOLE UK) then mix in a little viking and some norman and you get one badass nation BRITAIN.
