Quoting: optimum judgment So it is not just here in US. no been happening here for at least a year....also a new type of low lying cloud that seems to reflect nearly all the light from street lamps, makes the cloud glow a dull orange even when its really dark out. i live on top of a high hill and have at least a 15 mile unobstructed view of the malvern hills, but of late i cant see over these damn clouds its weird,iv looked at this veiw all my life? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17984635 Oh I have been seeing these pretty often as well! They are little block rainbows, I tend to see them in the middle afternoon/evening as the sun is lower in the sky. They are beautiful but odd looking as I have really only noticed them in the last few months to maybe a year or so...I'm wondering if it some kind of particle in the atmosphere that has an odd reflection, ie. chemtrails (not like ice crystals). sundogs... You can see the rainbow colored patch without the halo effect commonly depicted in sundog photos. [link to en.wikipedia.org] Sundogs are made commonly of plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals in high and cold cirrus clouds or, during very cold weather, by ice crystals called diamond dust drifting in the air at low levels. These crystals act as prisms, bending the light rays passing through them with a minimum deflection of 22°. If the crystals are randomly oriented, a complete ring around the sun is seen — a halo. But often, as the crystals sink through the air they become vertically aligned, so sunlight is refracted horizontally — in this case, sundogs are seen. Sundogs..isn't it reassuring that they have a name...? It feels like normal...no, it is not. And there were no "sundogs" before the 90-es. Think of the oil spill under a car. If it drops on water, it create a thin layer on the top. A thin layer with rainbow colored edges. Sundogs are similar matter. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 3064678 11/29/2012 01:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | As I was walking to get in a vehicle in a parking lot, I had noticed a flock of birds (maybe geese) quite high in the sky and it seemed odd to me for some reason. Anyways I had gotten into the vehicle and then my mother had gotten in afterwards and she said to me did you see that in the sky?? Well, I immediately thought of the birds but said did I see what?? She said that flash of light!! I said no I hadn't. She said it was hard to describe and I asked her did it look like lightening?? No was her reply, she said it was just a quick flash of light that appeared to have come from the sky!! So now after reading this thread and my moms first hand account as witness to this phenomenon I will be ever more diligent in my own sky gazing. |
