Several neighbors said the woman had been seen in the area exposing herself, and that her husband had been seen dressed in women’s clothing, makeup and jewelry.

County Adult Protective Services had been referred to the home once before, but Christensen said he did not know when or why.

There was no record of domestic violence, Mata said.

Erick Chavez, 21, who lives next door, said he began smelling a foul odor about a week and a half ago. On Friday morning, he said it was overpowering. He and other neighbors described the couple as hostile.

About six months ago, Chavez said the woman began wandering around the neighborhood carrying a butcher knife and exposing herself with her pants around her ankles. That went on for about a month, he said.

The woman also preached in the street, he said, saying such things as, “God will smite you.”
