As long as gasoline is priced to the TENTH of a cent, the penny will survive.

Earlier this week Canada announced that they would be phasing out their penny coin. On the heels of the Canadian announcement, U.S. Treasury Secretary, Tim Giethner stated in a press conference today that the U.S. Mint will remove the penny and nickel coins from circulation, starting early in January 2013.

We got rid of them 20 years ago. They're no longer in circulation but they're still legal tender.

Me too. I estimate my net worth at about 35 trillion dollars. So doubt they'll ever do me much good. But I'll have ALL the money eventually.

I am also holding 17 trillion in $2 bills.

Not sure why I do this but... My story is more exaggerated than yours.

This doesn't have much\anything to do with the thread per se, but about a month ago, I cashed in my proverbial jar of pennies and nickels and ended up with an extra $53.23.

Cool story, eh?
 Quoting: Brian Moser

did you use those coin machines or did you roll up the coins by hand?
 Quoting: mrmuffins69

I'm lazy and used the Coinstar machine.
 Quoting: Brian Moser

how long did it take you? i still have my piggy bank from when i was a youngling thing weighs at least 20 lbs, i can either use coinstar which saves time but will be charged 10 cents for every dollar or spend hours rolling coins.
 Quoting: mrmuffins69

Roll them by hand? What the? We just take coins into the bank, they count it for us by weighing it.

Ok so when you go to the store and buy things..stuff always doesn't come out even..how would they make "change" if there isn't any pennies or nickles?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16553491

We round up or down. 3 cents becomes 5 cents. 7 cents becomes 5 cents. Etc. if you're paying with card then there is no need to round off.

It's funny, people are constantly talking about hyper inflation. But can't understand we can move the decimal point and pennies are gone (and no need for them)

Just like the half penny before. If you were at a store and the cashier said comes to $1.505 you would be like wtf! I'll give you the $1.50, so it will be the same with a full penny soon enough.

If you can get stupid ass people to understand may be a different question.

Yes, U.S. banks put them in a machine and sort and count them. If you have an account with a bank they do it for free. I don't know why anyone would pay those CoinStar machines. Most banks won't take them if they are rolled. That rolling idea always seemed stupid to me. Think how easy it was to add objects that were same size as the coins in that paper roll. metal washers, buttons, etc.

Sadly, a lot of people don't know or comprehend that SkewNews, the Onion, and others are parodies or satire, and they take it as gospel truth. so I understand your frustration and rant about morans. But, the penny-nickle issue was also in Wall Street Journal.

of course mainstream media is just as much of a joke and parody as Skew News or the Onion, so that doesn't actually help much. :)

That's what they said about the two dollar bill, so I bought a brick of them...all sequential and still in the shrink wrap...still worth $2 each...

Paper is still paper. Metal value changes constantly. Dum Dum
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28508707

The point is retard, the value of items usually goes up when they stop making them...
 Quoting: BRIEF

No dumbass! When copper prices soar and people melt pennies and eventually nickels, it reduces the amount of said coins therefore increasing the value on those coins.

But figure you and a bunch of other people bought a bunch of $2 bills and no one melted them.

Since melting paper just doesn't seem to work. There is still as many $2 bills out there just not being used (therefore 90% are still mint condition)

story I read earlier today said that they are going to start in 2013 making the coins out of stainless steel, because they cost to much now.

If they are going to remove them from circulation, then it is to inflate prices....make everything cost more, probably
