NATO missiles not for Syria no-fly zone: Turkish military

ANKARA - NATO surface-to-air missiles due to be stationed near Turkey's border with Syria will only be used to protect Turkish territory and not to establish a no-fly zone within Syria, the Turkish military said on Monday.

Turkey riled Syria, Russia and Iran by requesting the NATO surface-to-air Patriot system, designed to intercept aircraft or missiles, last Wednesday after weeks of talks on how to shore up security on its 900-km (560-mile) border as the conflict in Syria deepens.

Syria, which called the move "provocative", and its allies including Russia and Iran oppose any development that they perceive could be a first step towards implementing a no-fly zone.

"The deployment of the air and missile defense system is only to counter an air or missile threat originating in Syria and is a measure entirely aimed at defense," the Turkish military said in a statement.

"That it will be used to form a no-fly zone or for an offensive operation is out of the question," it said.

15:29 Syrian rebel officers have formed a commission to lay the foundations for a future army and liaise with the political opposition on issues such as arming fighters on the ground, a spokesman said on Monday.

Turkey's been playing with fire, sacrificing ties with Israel to gain influence among Arab nations. During this cold war, all military agreements and defense cooperation was suspended, including work on a strategic aerial intelligence system. Now, with the Syrian crisis, they want Israel's defense technology and contractors like they had back in the good ol' days.

This morning, NPR carried a report from a recent defector from the FSA who said that Assad is pulling his forces, especially tanks and aircraft, back from the front lines and toward Damascus. This matches what our sources have been reporting for more than a week. The increasing pace of FSA victories against major bases in Deir Ez Zor and peripheral bases in Aleppo is an indication that the FSA is taking advantage of Assad's withdrawal. The interesting development, then, is that despite these moves to keep the capital more secure, the FSA has still been able to capture several large bases both east and west of Damascus.

Gaining more ground and holding it are two different things. Their lines are getting stretched and thinning out if they are gaining so much territory. Maybe more to this that Assad just pulling back to Damascus

This is a map of the recent gains that the FSA has been taking around Damascus. The FSA is green, the Syrian Army is red, yellow is disputed or not under contention. Two military bases have been taken in the outskirts of Damascus in the past week. The balance of power is shifting.
