I'm totally calling B.S. on OP. You can't "talk" to anyone on a scanner, you can only listen.

That would be AM broadcast band here in the states. Not sure how it's used int he UK. But if that were the frequency it could have been most anywhere, what time did this take place? The lower HF bands tend to propagate better at night, so if this took place early in the day the signal could have come from the Americas, but not necessarily.
