My apartment is right beside a river here, not a major one, and it had almost burst its banks last night, it hasn't really receded any during the day today either, with more severe wet weather on the way. I was surprised to see the environment agency out here with their orange flashing lights on their vehicles for about 3 hours on a late sunday night (almost midnight), banging and clatterinig around with drainage systems next to the river.

In its new report The cost of cold, published today, the charity warned of a hidden public health scandal as thousands of older people continue to die prematurely from cold-related illnesses because their homes are too cold.

The report said each year there are around 27,000 excess winter deaths, most of them among older people and caused by respiratory problems, strokes and heart attacks due to cold temperatures.

Quick question for the brits in this thread - does "scanner" mean the same thing over on your side of the pond as it does on ours? Over here a scanner would be like a police scanner that is used to listen (but not send) to police and government radio traffic (marine, police, weather, ect). Is it the same over there, or does scanner refer to HAM radio. Just wondering as often we seem divided by a common language.

It took just six months for a warm and sunny Europe to be engulfed in ice, according to new research.

Previous studies have suggested the arrival of the last Ice Age nearly 13,000 years ago took about a decade - but now scientists believe the process was up to 20 times as fast.

The subsequent mini Ice Age lasted for 1,300 years and was probably caused by the sudden emptying of Lake Agassiz in Canada, which burst its banks and poured freezing freshwater into the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.

That would have disrupted the Gulf Stream - the flows of which depend on variations in saline levels and temperature - and allowed the ice to take hold.

Some scientists believe that if the Greenland ice cap melts it could disrupt the world's ocean currents and have a similarly dramatic effect.
