He died in 2001 or so.
They kept him in a freezer, and were gonna trot out the corpse, parade it around, pose with it, and make up a really good story.
Well, they made a pretty good diversionary story about the "Raid", but the body was in such poor condition (freezer burned) they couldn't trot it around like they wanted.
So they made up the dog and pony show about burial at sea with no photographs and no witnesses.
