The justices on Monday left in place a lower court ruling that found that the state's anti-eavesdropping law violates free speech rights when used against people who tape law enforcement officers. The law sets out a maximum prison term of 15 years. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit in 2010 against Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez to block prosecution of ACLU staff for recording police officers performing their duties in public places, one of the group's long-standing monitoring missions. Opponents of the law say the right to record police is vital to guard against abuses. [more at link] Guard against abuses? You mean bad guys always beat up on the fuzz? |

You're about all that keeps me from believing all cops are evil. Thanks... The majority of cops are true blue, hard-working, local heroes. There are indeed some stupid fucks and generally sadistic cops in departments across the nation, but I will stick to my notion that MOST are not that way. Those "Bad Cops" really piss me off because they only succeed in making the job harder and more restricted. It may seem like you hear about "so many" bad decisions, shootings, beatings etc... Simply because they gain the attention of the press. Think of it this way, when was the last time (if EVER) you saw a news story titled "Officer arrives on scene, thwarts homicide and takes the armed suspect into custody without a fight" I'm pretty sure that there hasn't been a headline like that, but I guarantee you, It happens nearly EVERYDAY. You know why you don't hear about it? because it's our job! But even if you extrapolate it a little to look for the truly unique individuals, I can say with certainty that you'll NEVER read a national headline that states "Local Officer hands buys food for Homeless man" or "Volunteers his/her time at the neighborhood youth center" Etc... You get my drift. Those types of stories are often run by local media and not nationally syndicated, therefore ALL "everyone" ever hears is about the San Francisco Deputy who robbed a bank, or the New York Officer who was planning on eating some woman. Etc... It's a numbers thing. So, 100 "dirty cops" are outed every year.... (That's a good thing) But, there are nearly 500,000 cops in the nation. So what you're seeing in the negative press, while truly outrageous, is but a small percentage of the total Law Enforcement numbers. "law enforcement" = policy enforcement (policy/police) they're not keepers of the peace, as they should be, but they serve and protect the policies, whatever they may be that day many police might be good-hearted people, but the root issue is that they serve a corrupt system with corrupt policies, which naturally attracts corrupt people to become officers - and the recruiting process guarantees that these violent and abusive types will be hired if they were truly "law enforcement", where common/constitutional law were the only law, their jobs would be easier and we would necessarily have and need fewer of them |

I agree with you, but what I don't get is why the good cops turn the other way? That thin blue line issue. There was a story a while back about a lady who was raped by the cop who arrived to check about a break in. The lady ran out shrieking, ran into his partner who thought she was fleeing, arrested her. A rape test proved the cop had assualted her, but he was not charged.... he was fired for loafing. The bastards knew he did it, but didn't want to have him arrested. Till the FBI got involved, and know the fucker is in jail where he belongs. Left to their own investigation, the chief just let him off the hook. Should have lost his job too. |
