I thought this could be interesting.
What would you do in some Third World country ?

This is, for starters, the take on this of one resourceful and clever individual :

If I were parachuted into the tropical third world with a small plot of denuded land and with little money and a hut, I think I would do the following:

1. Think water and sanitation. Setup rainwater catchment and a well if needed and possible; dig a swale or rip a keyline if necessary. Set up compost toilet. Save gray water.

2. Immediately plant potatoes or the local equivalent/strain (and/or sweet potatoes, yams or starch plant). Cut up the potatoes, one eye per piece, and plant them in a pile of straw, hay, and/or compost. They'll grow no matter what the soil and provide carbs for energy to enhance human capital.

3. Mulch every piece of ground in sight as high as is realistic by chopping down anything that doesn't move that I don't immediately/otherwise need.

4. Set up a simple moringa tree bare root nursery plot and plant moringa trees and fruit trees like there's no tomorrow. (I would first go to the Trees for a Future site and tattoo their excellent resource archives on both arms and legs so you'll know how to do this.) [link to www.plant-trees.org]

5. Make a raised keyhole garden from scrap and compost. Add more as possible and link them into a mandala garden scheme, as shown in Gaia's Garden (I would first go to Send a Cow site to learn how to do this.) [link to www.sendacow.org.uk]

6. Fence all the above from critters and thieves as necessary.

7. Bring in some chickens or ducks.

8. Dig and seal a fish pond. Plant edible water plants. Plant mulberries or equivalent around the pond to feed fish. Get tadpoles and stock pond with fish.

9. Plant small grain plot.

10. Use the above as a demonstration permastead and teach others.

What would you do?"

You will love this old series.

Perma-culture is cool, not much information on it though. It could work in North America as there are lots of farms with dead soil and erosion control in flash flood areas end up with productive fields. On large scale (so much for the desert island thing) the Mississippi flood plains should be landscaped so high areas are build to farm buildings and such that are above the high water mark and the fields have a 1% slope in a terraced setting so the waters do the soild some good.

The way things are going you'd be better off making a permaculture garden in your backyard.
A NZ man has been travelling the 3rd world for decades, in Africa and India and elsewhere setting them up.
We have them here too so we're prepared for mass DOOOM.
How about Belgium?

I do not think this is what you had in mind, nor is it politically correct, but I assure you it works very well in the real world.

1. Parachute, harness, clips, metal industrial items, etc. on my person would be immediately traded for a weapon. If a weapon cannot be procured by trade, then sell items.

2. Steal as much as necessary to to procure more weapons.

3. Begin to recruit locals by choosing the most brutal yet intelligent individual as a second in command. Arm this person.

4. You are in charge of finances which keep you and your second in command satisfied, and so on down the line.

5. Kidnapping and torture are the quickest ways to establish a larger and larger local army.

6. Once you have the local population "paying" your now "local militia" for protection, that local area is yours.

7. Eliminate all opposition with extreme prejudice within the local area.

8. Begin to branch out into other areas, with the weakest first.

9. Establish a personal protection force, loyal only to you.

10. Eliminate your entire original executive force and their families.

11. Replace with loyalists within your personal protection force.

12. Repeat these steps until you control the entire third world country.

13. Begin this process anew within another country to gain control over it, thus weakening it.

14. Once weak, invade, brutalize, and subjugate this other country.

15. Again, eliminate all opposition, leaders, and their families to replace with loyalists.

Repeat as much as you like.

It works quite nicely as third world countries tend to be next to one another. Additionally, large powers like dealing with individuals who can get things done for them without question over large territories for personal gain.

A farm as was written out always makes a nice addition as a food source worked by slaves for battle hardened troops.

Re: If I were parachuted into the Third World, the first thing I would do... (permaculture)
I would get to the highest viewpoint that I could and seek out the most beneficial microclimate for a homestead by taking inventory of the favorable solar, slope, surface water and topographical aspects. I would take an inventory of tree species, seeking coconuts, bananas, common mango, breadfruit, nut trees and other other signs of forest agriculture.

I would then walk towards the area with the best combination of these elements and would pay keen attention to all of the plants, animals along the way, foraging edible plants as I went.

When I arrive in the best area I can only imagine there would already be indigenous agriculture and habitation going on. I would make myself useful and learn the customs and food production methods of the locals while sharing what I know about plant reproduction, seed saving, simple technology, natural health, etc.

I would hope to get my own plot to care for, mulch the crap out of it the lest useful biomass, build a bamboo thatch hut and get down to planting a tropical homestead, with lots of sweet potato mounds. :)

What is Permaculture? (This would make a good thread OP)

I agree. This is not a topic which is often being discussed here at GLP. Permaculture also, IMHO, if intelligently applied, works very well together with Bio-dynamic gardening.

Re: If I were parachuted into the Third World, the first thing I would do... (permaculture)
Little money. What does the person consider to be little?

Understand I took a barren plot of land that was cheifly sand with 2 foot tall dried weeds and converted it over years into a lush woodland. That took several thousand dollars and lots and lots of water and hard labor.

1. Think water and sanitation. Setup rainwater catchment and a well if needed and possible; dig a swale or rip a keyline if necessary. Set up compost toilet. Save gray water.

Unfortunately most of the hard hit poverty areas are on hard-packed clay that has been sun roasted for a few thousand years. Ground water is non-potable in many areas, or so deep that you would have to dig a well at least 200 feet deep. hope you like trying to dig through hard baked clay, then stone.

Most of these areas see next to no rain, so yeah dig your catch basin and start praying with the other millions of people in your area who have been praying for rain for generations, perhaps your added voice will help.

Compost, hay, straw - Really? Most poverty hit areas are experiencing drought, and what grass that passes for hay or straw is fed to the village goat who produced milk. There is no way in hell they are going to allow you to take that precious resource and waste it in this manner. The villagers will kill you.

Magic potatoes - these must be, or you just do not understand that potatoes need water (understand you are going to be digging that well for a very long time).

3. Mulch every piece of ground in sight as high as is realistic by chopping down anything that doesn't move that I don't immediately/otherwise need.

Too late, most everything has already been chopped down. It was used by the grandparents to cook food when there were trees and food to be cooked.

On what computer are you placing this order? Understand that the place you are in is so poor they don't have electricity, running water, sewage, food - but somehow they manage to have computers and the internet. Yay.

And I take it those trees are free - right - oh wait, you brought a shit load of money in your pants.

5. Make a raised keyhole garden from scrap and compost. Add more as possible and link them into a mandala garden scheme, as shown in Gaia's Garden (I would first go to Send a Cow site to learn how to do this.) [link to www.sendacow.org.uk]

More compost out of nothing. Even if you have composting material, do you really think you can get that soil farm able in short order? It takes a month of turning every other day to reduce most leafy material into compost. If you are lazy and just pile it and let it sit it takes 6 months to a year. compost is great, i make it all the time - but even then it took three years of lots of hard work to turn a lot of available green stuff I hauled in into one inch of top soil on my minor vegetable garden. 15 years later I have 4 inches of black soil. I also had a truck to haul in stuff - let me guess, a truck was strapped to your back with that parachute and thousands of dollars.

6. Fence all the above from critters and thieves as necessary.

Yay - you are turning a massive profit from wasting the goats food (which the goat died by the way) and I guess you are selling your crop to the villagers who make something on the order of nothing per year. No pay checks in these places... So where you got the magic money for this fencing is interesting... Oh thats right, being a rich first world person you brought all of this money with you.

7. Bring in some chickens or ducks.

More money, and your chickens or ducks won't make it through a week. Do you know what kind of nasty predatory critters live in that third world wasteland? Nope, neither do I - but I bet they all eat chicken (and children too, but who cares about children).

8. Dig and seal a fish pond. Plant edible water plants. Plant mulberries or equivalent around the pond to feed fish. Get tadpoles and stock pond with fish.

And the water is coming from where? Two years later you have a hole 150 feet deep and still no water. Sorry. This is a reality that most impoverished people live with each and everyday - no potable water within easy reach. They definitely are not going to allow you to waste it to fill up your swimming pool. If they didn't kill you over stealing the goat's hay and straw, they will kill you over this.

9. Plant small grain plot.

10. Use the above as a demonstration permastead and teach others.

do I really need to poke holes here - I think I have pretty much demonstrated that long before this point is reached you are dead - your bones bleaching in the sun.

What would you do?"

==============================

What would I do?

First I would pull my head out of my ass.

Understand that most of these places are in nations where the government steals all things coming in for the poor to turn into weapons, food, clothing, blankets - seeds, tools.

So I would seek ways to get that government over thrown and a real government that isn't a dictatorship put in place.

The rest will then nearly magically fall into place as suddenly all the aide the world is sending is actually getting to the people who need it most, and all of those magical things of self sustained gardens become a real possibility.

This all assumes a tropical climate. If anyone wants to try a more temperate climate, I have a large farm in WV available for under 300K that would be great -- yr round creek, hardwood timber, pastures, rich bottom land hay meadows, barn, house...

Almost Heaven, hardly America. Check it out.

The very first thing you should do, is get up from the couch and actually DO something. You got NO IDEA, how it is to live in a 3rd world country. You can't do ANYTHING. The government is corrupt, the police is corrupt, the public workers are corrupt, judges are corrupt, deputies are corrupt, they just don't let you live a full life. They need you to be under their control.
