Interesting....Over 530 Quakes- last 30 days in LONG VALLEY, CALIFORNIA..... | |
| taniatarn (OP) User ID: 28495578 11/26/2012 10:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Noticed today that there seemed to have been a run of Quakes in central California so thought I would see where they were....and the location is the Long Valley area in California... Quoting: taniatarn Here is an image of the last 30 days.....over 530 quakes in the area. The depths are between 45km to 0.1km deep...with most at the moment around the 5-6km mark..will be interesting to see if the depth starts to get shallower... [link to img163.imageshack.us] ANd it is definitely over 530 quakes...it doesnt look that many but thats because they are one on top of the other in a couple of concentrated areas.... Its one of the largest Calderas in the world... Last Edited by taniatarn on 11/26/2012 11:25 PM Interested observer of all things interesting! | taniatarn (OP) User ID: 28495578 11/26/2012 11:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've been watching this area too OP. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16951501 It's seems to be picking up. Specifically just north of Ridgecrest. Will be interesting to see what USGS comes up with in their recent Geological survey of the area...I cant find any results as yet but hopefully they will be releasing their findings soon, as there is a lot of concentrated activity in specific areas... | RAG User ID: 27362700 11/26/2012 11:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | after some quick checking, this does appear to be about double what would have been considered a "normal" monthly total but the area had seemed to have calmed down...? Good catch OP. I'm watching the west pretty close what with the pending "ARK" storm inbound as well... ![]() As for me and my house, We will stand with the Lord. | RAG User ID: 27362700 11/27/2012 12:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is difficult to find info. Did come across this but am unsure of the site so just be warned I dont know how accurate this info is. It is just indicating a much smaller number of quakes in a shorter period of time in April of this year. Other things I was reading have me thinking that 5 to 10 a day was not uncommon, but was considered a time of "unrest" in the area. Then you will have first hand knowledge of whats happening. I just looked. It took 5 whole minutes. I'd share but I think people need to start finding the information around here on their own. Some people just throw numbers around here like popcorn. No offense to the OP. His numbers are OK. |

| TrinityMountain User ID: 22145178 11/27/2012 12:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I noticed on the RSOE site today that alot of the earthquakes where around volcanos more than normal I believe but I am not sure considering I just started viewing the site about 2 months ago. Quoting: donnie0805 Your right about that. Especially around Greece and Turkey. I've been watching everyday. Twice a day for three years. Like a weather report. Its easier to spot patterns in the choas that way. |

Thread: EQ swarm Turkey ....and all around the world Volcanic activity is definitely higher than what we have seen in previous decades. The numbers of 530 quakes in Long Valley area in the last 30 days was taken direct from the USGS site...the map actually showed 579 quakes but a few were not directly in the area that I would call Long Valley so I deducted ones that weren't in the main concentrated areas shown..,..hope that makes sense. | taniatarn (OP) User ID: 28495578 11/27/2012 12:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Found this article quite interesting....specifically the following comment.. Long Valley Caldera has shown sustained unrest since 1980 characterized by recurring earthquake swarms, inflation (dome-shaped uplift) of the resurgent dome, and increased levels of fumarolic activity accompanied by high concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas in the soils around Mammoth Mountain on the southwest margin of the caldera. [link to www.icdp-online.org] There has definitely been further uptick in activity of late so that means the volcano has been showing sustained increased actiivty for 32 years...makes you wonder exacty what has built up underneath in all that time...quakes are getting shallower so can now understand why they decided to do an indepth survey of the area to find out exactly what is going on. | taniatarn (OP) User ID: 28495578 11/27/2012 12:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Just did a bit more research...So according to USGS the area gets around 20 quakes a day since 1980 when the sustained unrest began...so the 30 day amount is normal, and has been that way for the last 30 years ( but was not normal prior to that )...interesting. TYPICAL BEHAVIOR: Since 1980, typical background geologic activity in the Long Valley area has included as many as 20 earthquakes of magnitude 2 or smaller a day, occasional swarms of magnitude 3 and larger earthquakes (felt locally), and uplift of the center of Long Valley Caldera at a rate of about 1 inch per year. Swarms including magnitude 4 earthquakes may occur about once a year. [link to pubs.usgs.gov] I look forward to reading the findings of their survey...maybe that may shed more light on exactly what is happening in the region. Long Valley Caldera to Mammoth Mountain are swarming at the same time. Earthquakes are the normal in California, however within the last week an upswing in activity has been noted. The Long Valley Caldera is showing signs that magma is indeed moving down there. The Long Valley Caldera is something that is dismissed due to the Yellowstone Super Volcano. There is evidence in the past that the Long Valley Caldera is more dangerous than Yellowstone, and just a stone’s throw away from the populated regions of Southern California. The caldera is just north of Ridgecrest off of Highway 395 and activity has been spiking within the last week. “We don’t think much is going on there, but it is being monitored,” said the USGS. “We have teams in the area and have just recently finished a study on the area.” So while no one can predict what will happen, just as Yellowstone, the Long Valley Caldera is considered a super volcano that can go off at anytime. “We’ve notice an increase in 2s and 3s across California as well, with poppers across Southern California,” said TheWeatherSpace.com Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin. “This usually means we are going to have the stress released soon in the area. What is also interesting is Long Valley and Mammoth Mountain activity is happening at the same time. This is real interesting.” According to Jim Berkland, a retired geologist, Full Moons usually generate large earthquakes due to the tidal forces. There is a lunar eclipse tonight so the moon can’t get any fuller. –The Weather Space |
