Morgan Stanley’s Doom Scenario: Major Recession in 2013
The global economy is likely to be stuck in the “twilight zone” of sluggish growth in 2013, Morgan Stanley has warned, but if policymakers fail to act, it could get a lot worse.

The bank’s economics team forecasts a full-blown recession next year, under a pessimistic scenario, with global gross domestic product (GDP) likely to plunge 2 percent.

“More than ever, the economic outlook hinges upon the actions taken or not taken by governments and central banks,” Morgan Stanley said in a report.

Under the bank’s more gloomy scenario, the U.S. would go over the “fiscal cliff” leading to a contraction in U.S. GDP for the first three quarters of 2013. In Europe, the bank’s pessimistic scenario assumes a failure of the European Central Bank (ECB) in cutting rates and a delay of its bond-buying program.

Most of this is assuming that the CBs won't continue printing and the pol's won't continue to ramp up debt.

This fiscal cliff shit makes no sense. The point of raising tax on the wealthy is to spread it around, according to lord Obama. Since we are the wealthiest in the world by far here in the US, ALL of our taxes should go up according to his vision. Dem's should be loving the fiscal cliff tax hikes, gives them more money to play with and the rest of us less. I say we let it happen and live with the consequences. We deserve it for electing such immoral people.

Re: Morgan Stanley’s Doom Scenario: Major Recession in 2013
LONDON — The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development on Tuesday sharply cut its forecast for the world economy, warning that failure to end the euro crisis and avert a fiscal impasse in the United States could cause a global recession.

The O.E.C.D., based in Paris, predicted that gross domestic product in its 34 member countries, all of which have developed economies, would expand 1.4 percent in 2013, significantly below the forecast of 2.2 percent the organization made just six months ago.

Even that forecast assumes that U.S. lawmakers reach a budget agreement to prevent billions of dollars in tax increases and automatic spending cuts from going into effect automatically at the end of the year.

If the United States does not avoid that so-called fiscal cliff, “a large negative shock could bring the U.S. and the global economy into recession,” according to the forecast, written by Pier Carlo Padoan, the organization’s deputy secretary general and chief economist.

Even leaving that possibility aside, the O.E.C.D. report makes grim reading, particularly with regard to the 17-nation euro area, which is mired in recession and is where the “greatest threats to the world economy remain.”
