I can't imagine the horrible comments made by other passengers that she had to endure during this whole ordeal.

Most people of that size wouldn't even attempt to travel overseas. Maybe she wanted to see her homeland once again before she died; maybe an elderly relative totally unable to travel was so dear to her she took the trip.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25148952

What if she had to take a piss or shit on that plane? That is a long trip if I'm not mistaken... Can you imagine that fatty walking sideways down the isle with her fupa hitting someone's face while her smelly ass crack that never gets wiped properly or bathed hits the passenger on the opposite side...

What's the matter with you people? She was a human being, loved by her husband and God.

What makes you all think you're superior to her just because your body is smaller?

A person is not defined by their size, it's the size of the heart that matters, and most of the replies in this thread are sickening. Like a pack of wolves making fun of someone elses pain and misfortune.

Well, one of the airlines must have flown her there. Why didn't they fly her back?

If she were that large, would she even be able to pass the narrow aisle on an aircraft?

She certainly could not have sit in an emergency exit row, so that means she could render the aircraft a death trap if there was an emergency evacuation & she blocked exit for other people.

I am sorry this happened to her, but I would not want to get trapped in a burning aircraft because another passenger was a human barrier.

Exactly what I was thinking. At some point you become a safety risk to everyone else on the plane in case of an emergency.

I guess, even if she were to buy two seats, she couldn't have fit the lap belt over her. If they had hit turbulence and she were thrown around, imagine the injury to others with 425 pounds slamming into you? I feel sorry for her, but I see the airline POV for safety reasons.

You are one fucking retard. I hope you burn to death in a plane crash full of really skinny people. Then you'll realize that in reality, even if the plane was full of midgets they would trample you to death. It doesn't take a fat person to create a barrier for you to move. All it takes is a bunch of normal sized people stuffed into a small area and then have them freak out and trample each other. If anything, sitting next to her might protect you from getting trampled. She would act as a firewall.

You people act like all overweight people are the way they are for medical reasons... That's false. About 1% of overweight people can't control their weight due to medical reasons... That being said, it's hard to put the other 99% in one group. Honestly, you're probably looking at 60% of fat people being the way they are because they are lazy and don't care for their bodies. I'm making fun of that percentage, if that makes it any better!

Everyone you just described can be carried or wheeled to the exit without undue difficulty. A 450 pound person who takes up 3 seats may well interfere with an emergency exit situation and there's not much anyone can do to help them not be a problem.

You're hilarious. On Friday I was flying with my brother when we had an alternator failure on our little single engine plane. As the voltage on the battery dropped, we lost the backlight on our glass cockpit displays. We made it back to the airport with an estimated 6 minutes of power remaining. Sounds like a lot, but when it's your ass hanging up a few thousand feet it doesn't feel like it. Did I panic and pass out? Nope. I stayed calm and helped my brother get the plane on the ground.

I don't think most of you even read the article. The Solteszs spent three weeks in their native Hungary before Vilma needed to come back for treatment for diabetes and renal disease. She was likely very sick at that point. The airline reserved three seats for her but she was so heavy they couldn't get her out of the wheel chair. They tried to move her for 30 minutes and had to give up. I would hardly say the airlines are at fault.

Ouch.

Still, there do have to be limits on things and while that is horrible to have to do to anyone, there are other ways to travel. (Boat in this case. No one thinks about that one anymore however...)

I don't want to punish people for being fat, or ridicule them. It's simply that physical properties, such as the floors of aircraft are designed for specific weights.

They start to have strain problems with anyone over a certain weight or concentration of foot fall. (Women with high heels are actually the worst obstacle. The concentration of forces is so great that the floors have to be an extra eights of an inch thick just for that.)

It's horrible to have to tell someone that they aren't allowed to travel due to things like that, but unless everyone else in the world is going to be expected to pay a lot more per trip to accommodate them, it has to be done.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 927602

Surely it is possible to design an airplane seat for very large people--and to design it to avoid stressing the floor with concentrated weight.

You are another one who didn't learn basic high school economics. The price of a plane ticket is the intersection of the supply and demand curves for plane tickets. Prices don't rise as costs increase. A plane ticket costs what it costs whether fat people fly or not. We do not pay more per flight to accommodate fat people or disabled people or anyone else. The cost od fat seats on planes will hardly affect the supply of plane tickets or the demand for them.

Exactly.

And imagine if the airlines somehow managed to get her into the 3 seats.. very likely they could have harmed some part of her body, then he'd probably be suing for something else.
