Start working out bro. If the depression and feelings of loss of self worth hasnt hit yet, cut them off early by building the one thing constant in your life.

Jobs are easy to find. Jobs that you WANT to do are hard to find.

Just find work, any work, and let it lead you from there.

If you go to church, ask members for any opportunities they know about. Go to a labor finders group and get on their contact list.

Get off GLP and search the internet. Insurance companies are always interested in hiring someone for sales. Just find one that will help pay for you to take the insurance exam, study and make a living at it. My dad was in insurance and we had plenty of money growing up.

Look for new businesses in the area and see if they are hiring.

If you want to sit around and play games all day, then there's not much out there for ya...sorry.

Yeah well it's winter and sucks outside so...NEXT

Indoor fish farming - Free food for you and your family, and nice little home business. Your neighbors will buy up all the extra fish you have.

Indoor red worm farming - Food for your fish farm, and a nice little home business. Besides, the local fishermen will be banging down your door for fishing bait!

Indoor mushroom farming - Free food, and nice income home business. Look it up on ebay. Depending on the type your grow, people will pay you top dollar for fresh just hand picked mushrooms. Your neighbors who really love mushrooms will love you! Rotate their growth to always have them available. Most mushrooms come up/grow in just one night while in complete darkness.

Indoor gardening with sprouts, and simple hydroponics systems, or simple window farms. This can be done right in most kitchens. Free food, but very nourishing even in small amounts. Great for growing young children which I believe you said you have.

Home Church services with family, friends, and neighbors. Pretty much self explanatory. Great idea in these trying times we live in, and it will only get worse! Great community gathering!

Of course for the above first three a basement would help.

I am not saying this as a joke to the other poster who recommended the outdoor version in the winter. I know people who have been very successful with these things, and you are not limited to doing this in the winter only. These are all year round systems.

I myself grow food indoors every winter by sprouting. I also dehydrate much of my foods for both short term and long term storage. Another practice of mine is to distill all of my drinking water all year round... zero fluoride!!

OK so the first time for me ever of basically being unemployed. I own my own business but literally have no business so I don't even go in to work because I have no heat or electricity there (remodel I can't afford to finish). Anyway I'm used to being busy all day nearly everyday and now I just stay up later and sleep in later. Not much cash so not a whole lot to do and it's driving me mad. For the first time after 12 years in business I'm considering finding a jon ahhh!! Believe that will be a tough one after only being my own boss. I do enjoy spending the time with my wife and son but not working makes me feel like I don't have much purpose. I can ride it out until Jan if TEOTWAWKI doesn't happen. peace

In the same boat as you for about 6 months. It is hard because you are likely over qualified for any normal job.

Learn something new everyday and if you can't afford books than the Library is a great place. At least it gets you out of the house everyday and keep you from going stir crazy.

Also, you will learn how to get by with less and be more effective with your money. Once you learn that it will never go away either, which is a good thing, if and when things turn for the better.

Nothing wrong with video games. You buy the game once and it keeps you from thinking about how you don't have a job and being depressed. It also keeps you from going out and spending money you shouldn't. People hate on video games but they'll sit there and watch mindless, brainless TV shows like America Idol and all those other gay reality shows like Biggest Loser and The Bachelor and Bachelorette. Video games are far more interactive. I've been rocking XCOM: Enemy Unknown on Classic Mode with the Ironman option. It's very hard but a like chess game because as soon you stop thinking your guys get killed and you have to start over. Worth every penny! Don't let haters make you feel like a loser. It's just psychological warfare to try and dumb you down. Besides even first person shooters have been scientifically proven to improve hand-eye coordination. You won't get that from watching TV. The army games are made with input from the military and teach tactics just in case SHTF for real and you gotta shoot it out. Video games are awesome!

Thanks for all the good replies. I will NEVER take gov benefits as that says hey I need you to take care of us! I'm in the auto sales business and used to enjoy it but the banks will no longer lend on older vehicles thus making my business obsolete unless people have cash which is not often these days. I am ready for something else but not just anything. If desperation struck yes I would deliver pizzas! It's been a stressful business and I'm actually enjoying the down time but it's too much down time for me. I just told my wife the other day I want to volunteer Christmas Eve at a homeless shelter so I'm going to look into doing that. We are fortunate enough to have some inventory that will be cash but they are not selling so we are just scraping by until then. My skills in selling are good but I would rather do something helping people this time around. peace

OP if you are in auto sales Craingslist and www.ebay.com are your friend. And you don't have to leave home unless someone with cash in hand comes to view what's for sale. Lots of people can get loans via their credit unions. Forget the banks. Autos are often auctioned off on ebay. Craig's list works well for local sales.

Op I have been unemployed for at least 6 years now. I am always short of cash. I have become accustomed to this lifestyle and when I am feeling bored, I read books. It's important to keep your mind stimulated.

Have any old hobbies you did when you were younger, that you can resurrect?

Scan bulletin boards at local stores, including health food stores and gardening centers. There are a LOT of free classes on all kinds of subjects. You might meet others there, as well, and it could lead to further interests.

Strap a rake and shovel to your car, and go door to door in a retired person's neighborhood. Leaves just fell, and some older people can't rake themselves. Sometimes they want a bit of pruning done, weeding, or something dug out. Don't have to charge a lot, you'll feel good doing it. If you need instructions on how to prune, go to the library and get an instructive DVD. Some older people will gladly pay you to clean their gutters, do something on the roof, move some furniture. They need help but don't think to call someone in the yellow pages for just a small job.

Learn how to knit or crochet. I'm not kidding. The most popular guy in college did beautiful stuff. Get a large bag of yarn at a second hand store for about $10. Make scarves and slippers for Christmas presents. Our local library even has a once a week knitting club, beginners welcome. Libraries have how to books on that as well.

Get some books on tape from the library.

Ever play a musical instrument? Do it again.

Scan second hand shops, just for fun. You might see a project there you could buy to finish up. Books and How-To's are cheap there, too.

Learn how to grow sprouts at home. Great vitamins and minerals, cheap, easy, saves on buying vegetables.

Build some shelves or some other carpentry work. I know nothing about carpentry but I'm doing it! Turning an under the stair empty space into usable storage.

Do something creative. Find scraps of tile and decorate a box. Break mirror pieces and decorate a box. Again, I'm not kidding. Sometimes when you let your creative side out, you will surprise yourself. Get a used water color set and fool around.

Volunteer for meals on wheels to deliver food.

Call your local volunteer agency. Go to a city council meeting. Buy a house plant and learn about it.

For about $40, you can get everything you need to make candles for gifts. (Online). Amazing how creative you can get, and use stuff around the house for molds. If you do well, sell them at a local store.

Clean the gutters. Plant some garlic. Make a collage. Faux paint your bathroom or hallway (buy cheap mismatched paint and play with it).

Have you ever thought of selling on ebay? I have a family member who does $6,500-$8,500 per week in sales this time of year. In the slower summer months, $2,000-$3,500 per week in sales, and that's not too bad for the slowest time of year.
