It's all based on personality, peer pressure, a cultivated newspeak (see the novel 1984), and pure idiocy that has been raised to new heights never before seen in the United States. The pervasive propaganda probably is only rivaled by failed regimes such as the Soviet Union and perhaps Nazi Germany.
