I have always worked as a single (not by choice) mother and have not felt the need to apply for reduced lunches, free lunches, and other assistance because I did not need it. But you do wonder - if I did take it, how much better off would I be? The earned income tax credit is a biggie. It has been a help to me. But free lunches, free this and that, gaming the system to milk it for more, no. |

But what if I did decide not to work - how much worse off would we really be? From the info I glean here, for many single parents, the answer would be : not worse off at all, maybe better. |

If you belong to a church or synagogue, they usually ask you to tithe (give 10% of income) or use a sliding scale. If I did it according to my full-time income, it would have been very little. Including child support (which is not taxable) made my contribution much bigger, but I did not want to cheat and so I included it in my 'income'. No, it is not good to be dependent. | NightWisp User ID: 25023241 12/01/2012 11:17 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I once worked at a community college. My job was to order lab supplies and make sure the materials were on had for labs and prepared when they met. Biology / Chemistry labs. Very little Physical sciences. Anyway. I worked 12 month contract. Most people were either 10 or 12 month contracts. I wanted 10 but was not allowed to opt for it. So I was offered an 11 month contract. Long story short. With my 11 month salary spread across 12 monthly pay periods, I was less than 100 dollars off my regular pay check each month. In other words. the 12th month I was working to pay taxes. In the days of the Tudors men who were convicted of high treason were hanged, drawn and quartered. High Treason included counterfeiting money and "coining" (the clipping of coins for pieces of silver and gold which were melted down to produce counterfeit coins), possession of coining equipment and colouring base metal coins (to pass them off as of higher value). No trial is possible today naturally since the state is legally above the state bound by law. Prosperum ac felix scelus Virtus vocatur (Successful and fortunate crime is called virtue). Seneca: Herc. Furens, ii. 250. [ Sir John Harrington (1561–1612) Treason doth never prosper: what ’s the reason? Why, if it prosper, none dare call it treason. |
