i have always wondered about the point where my earnings would overtake my possible benefits as a single parent.

I have always worked as a single (not by choice) mother and have not felt the need to apply for reduced lunches, free lunches, and other assistance because I did not need it.

But you do wonder - if I did take it, how much better off would I be?
The earned income tax credit is a biggie. It has been a help to me. But free lunches, free this and that, gaming the system to milk it for more, no.

From the info I glean here, for many single parents, the answer would be : not worse off at all, maybe better.

it only applies if the person is female with '' ton'' of kids and without a father figure is even better... but for a single male , forget it, he will still be paying more on income taxes and forget such help from the gov regardless of whether he could live off that salary or not.

good to know that when i finish my engineering degree (with 20k debt) that i wont make as much money as one lazy vagina........why am i wasting my time.

it isn't just the government involved.

If you belong to a church or synagogue, they usually ask you to tithe (give 10% of income) or use a sliding scale.

If I did it according to my full-time income, it would have been very little.

Including child support (which is not taxable) made my contribution much bigger, but I did not want to cheat and so I included it in my 'income'.

No, it is not good to be dependent. Money you earn is the sweetest money.

I once worked at a community college. My job was to order lab supplies and make sure the materials were on had for labs and prepared when they met. Biology / Chemistry labs. Very little Physical sciences.

Anyway. I worked 12 month contract. Most people were either 10 or 12 month contracts. I wanted 10 but was not allowed to opt for it. So I was offered an 11 month contract.

Long story short. With my 11 month salary spread across 12 monthly pay periods, I was less than 100 dollars off my regular pay check each month.

In other words. the 12th month I was working to pay taxes.

Lemme get this straight: You are comparing the IRS with your local church? Does your church have a Tithe Enforcement Division?

I am on SSDI, back is really messed up as are my shoulders. No kids, own my house. $14k a year in income, fuel assistance this year is $200, I get medical help of about $100 a month and $16 in food stamps. Yup I am getting rich off the government No taxes so no earned income credit no negative tax, no other help.

AND fucking stupid as well...
