Unusual Murder of Crows...not a killing!
I love crows. I respect them. I honor them. Every time I see one I get excited.

Today I drove a road I have never taken. I just decided to drive straight instead of the turn I always take. I drove up a small rise (near Nampa in the state of Idaho) then started down the other side...

It was covered with crows. At least five acres of solid crows. I slowed down to a stop...it was unbelievable. It was solid with I would bet 10,000. crows were sitting on the earth on both sides of the concrete road. Many were huge! Some rose as we inched closer, but most stayed there on the ground. I cannot tell you how very big a lot of them were! There were a lot that were not as big. Some of the smaller ones did fly up and circled our dark red van.

It is all plowed farm land in this area. The last plowing was several weeks ago if it is the same as other fields we drive by.

There was one other car. It also parked to watch the unbelievable scene. They said they lived down the road about two miles but had never seen more than one or two crows in the area at any time

This is farm land and we have all seen thousands of seagulls on the plowed acres from time to time. But NEVER crows and what I think are Ravens. My camera was not with me...damn.

Could a bad storm be brewing on the west coast? We are about 12 hours drive from the Oregon coast. It has been pretty nice around here.

Could the coast be looking at an earthquake? I know, crazy talk...but still. Crows can live to be fifty years old and more. They might know something about things.

Before any of you say it, maybe they are on their way to Denver. lflash

Please get back to me with an insight into this murder of crows. This happened today, Nov. 27. 4:15 my time.

I have read that they hold "court" and judge transgressions.
Observers say that you might see one or two in the center, talking like a prosecutor, and then another answering.
Don't know what happens to the guilty.

They have families consisting of mother/father and a couple youngsters.

Interesting sighting OP, thanks for sharing. I wish you got a picture, of course. Was it silent or noisy? So most of them were grounded rather than flying?

What is going on with the crows? We had some yellow winged blackbirds swarm here in NV at the end of summer. Was quite rare to see here and they stayed for about a week then took off, was quite a chorus.

My husband had mentioned how quiet it was...like we were interupting them or something. Our windows were not open but we did buzz them down. Most of them did stay on the ground. I cannot get over the size of many.

I love Crows too OP.

I have one who comes to my yard to dunk his bread in the bird bath. He must like it moist. LOL!

If an earthquake happens the birds will be okay but a really bad storm then, maybe not. :-(

I always think of the birds when a bad storm breaks and the trees are blowing everywhere and the rain is lashing down. In fact I think of all the animals then - mice etc.

Crows are so family orientated that I hope you just saw the yearly family get together.

Let me just say this about birds, they talk to each other.

I was building a park and looked at a house that was on the boarder. It was fall and birds were flocking south. The house had hundreds of birds that landed on the ground in the font, side and back yard. As I watched them, they all took off in perfect rhythm. The birds in the back yard could not see the birds in the front yard yet they all went to flight in a singular motion.

Man doesn't understand his wild neighbors.

Spelling=someone, sheesh.
The witness was a man who was caretaker for an old Celtic archeological site which was very isolated.
For Celts ravens and crows are fucking sinister creatures.. in the old days their Totem druids sacrificed people and were hated by the other druids.
Eventually they were exterminated, mostly, but they're still around.
Stephen King picked up on that, being sensitive (and fucking weird himself).

You probably got our crows. They've taken off before the storm or gone into hiding.

Last night there was a bizarre bird signal on the radar. Huge flocks of birds leaving Northern California, heading about 70 miles out to sea and back in over Oregon. Looked like they did this to avoid mountains. Wonder if that was your crow flock? Many may have been coming out of the central valley, there also seemed to be a bird flow out of the valley toward the ocean flow.

Semi circle of birds 50 miles wide and over a hundred miles long thick enough to generate a solid radar return.

Oh yes! Makes me ashamed to be human.

Thanks OP. You keep your heart where your heart is, as we need more like you.

hf I hope you and all the animals stay safe. I agree with you that the birds know something - so if they have gathered in your area, should be okay.

I don't think crows migrate like that, but other black birds, grackles and things do.

OT, but here in Colorado the crow population was decimated by West Nile virus a few years ago, people were finding dead crows everywhere, but they seem to have recovered.

Unfortunately no. It means you are going to be devoured by crows. With that kind of number of crows in one location they will have to eat something. I can only assume it would be most unpleasant to be eaten alive by crows. I'd get the hell out of there while you still have the legs to carry you.
