Jebus never warned anyone about an afterlife of torture. . .He warned the folks standing right in front of Him (especially the Pharisees) about a landfill called Gehenna. Forty years later, some of them ended up there, denied an honorable burial by the Roman armies who did God's dirty work on that particular occasion.

We have to learn the symbolism. Here's your scary fire:

fiery trials = sharing in the sufferings of Christ - 1 Peter 4

Israel's captivity in Egypt = "an iron furnace" - Deuteronomy 4:20

A "fiery law" proceeded from God's right hand - Deuteronomy 33

God apparently set Israel "on fire", and they didn't even realize it - Isaiah 42



Note that per Revelation 14, those cast into this "lake" are "in the presence of the Lamb". He Himself is likely the fire that purifies.

The only thing that it burns up is the old, corrupt nature and its debris. . .

Fire was equated with hearing His voice

Omgosh - Fire is used in the Bible as both a metaphor for refinement and as A LITERAL PLACE OF TORTURE...

the bible is full of both literal and metaphorical teachings. through discernment we find which is literal nd which is metaphorical. guess what? Hell Fire is literal, it is literal fire that will never be quenched. weeping and gnashing of teeth. the only reason you even sought out to try and disprove and turn it all into metaphor is because of your own FEAR

"And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." Matt.10:28

You are assuming it's instantaneous destruction at the point of death... it's not; that's why we're suppose to fear...

God knows how long the punishment will be for each individual that rejects love and life in his son, before the body and soul are destroyed.

Then he gave a story of 2 real people who are real debtors just like in the parable. He forgave both Simon and the harlot... the harlot loved him more because she was forgiven more sins.

Consider scripture's own definition of "destruction":
Deuteronomy 4 warns the Israelites that they'll be destroyed (also apollymi in the Septuagint) when they adopt the ways of the heathen and serve idols. This "destruction" of the children of Israel is defined there as being scattered among the nations to serve more idols, and includes the provision that when they finally seek God, they'll find Him, because God is merciful and will not(?) destroy them. We can see here that "destruction" is not absolutely an annihilation in which persons cease to exist, yes? In this case, it's referring to earthly difficulties. People use the term "destroy" in the same exact allegorical manner today, usually when talking about merely defeating someone or "putting them in their place". Nevertheless, we've been brainwashed via Religion's fossilized mindset that "destruction" unquestionably equals the disastrous and eternal ruin of one's soul with no remedy or recourse whatsoever.
