In Hawaii, a coral reef infection has biologists alarmed!
A mysterious growth has been spreading under the waters of Hanalei Bay and elsewhere on Kauai's north shore. It's killing all the coral it strikes, and scientists can't stop it.

Los Angeles Times

November 27, 2012, 5:00 a.m.

HANALEI, Hawaii — When compiling a list of places that may be described as paradise, Hanalei Bay on the rugged north shore of the island of Kauai surely qualifies.

The perfect crescent bay, rimmed by palm trees, emerald cliffs and stretches of white sand, has always had a dreamy kind of appeal. It was on these shores that sailors in the movie "South Pacific" sang of the exotic but unattainable "Bali Ha'i."

The problem is what lies below the surface of the area's shimmering blue waters.

Since June, a mysterious milky growth has been spreading rapidly across the coral reefs in Hanalei and the surrounding bays of the north shore — so rapidly that biologist Terry Lilley, who has been documenting the phenomenon, says it now affects 5% of all the coral in Hanalei Bay and up to 40% of the coral in nearby Anini Bay. Other areas are "just as bad, if not worse," he said.

The growth, identified by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey as both a cyanobacterial pathogen — a bacteria that grows through photosynthesis — and a fungus, is killing all the coral it strikes, and spreading at the rate of 1 to 3 inches a week on every coral it infects.

"There is nowhere we know of in the entire world where an entire reef system for 60 miles has been compromised in one fell swoop. This bacteria has been killing some of these 50- to 100-year-old corals in less than eight weeks," Lilley said. "Something is causing the entire reef system here in Kauai to lose its immune system."

The discovery of the new coral disease is only one of a number of ailments afflicting nearly all the world's coral reefs, which are threatened by poisonous runoff, rising oceans, increasingly acidic waters and overfishing.

But this one could jeopardize a multibillion-dollar tourist industry in Hawaii, which depends on the stunning displays of color and wildlife for divers and snorkelers. That is especially true along the beaches of Kauai, where the north shore with a few exceptions remains a place of pristine natural beauty.

"It's very alarming," said Wendy Wiltse of the federal Environmental Protection Agency in Honolulu. "All of us are concerned about it. We want to do more. Part of the problem is we don't know what to do, especially in the case of a disease that's spread by a pathogen. It's not like we can put antibiotics in the ocean."

The disease was first spotted around Hanalei in 2004, but "at very low levels," and is the fourth coral disease outbreak documented in the state since 2009, said Greta Aeby, a coral expert with the University of Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology who has been working with Lilley to document the phenomenon.

The article said something is damaging the coal's immune system. While the pathogen may have ben present, and even problematic since 2004, I find it hard to believe it has been going at the pace of 2-3" per week and, "killing 50 or 100 year old coral in as little as eight weeks," for the last eight years. I get the distinct impression that the pace of the disease is accelerating. These two items, the rate it spreads and the immune system, as circumstantial evidence supporting the Fuku theory.
That alone, is nothing, in terms of proving it, I guess, but theories, it seems, are all we got.

Has any other theory been put forward? In that other thread? What are the consequences of this die-off? How far-reaching are they?

Re: In Hawaii, a coral reef infection has biologists alarmed!
yes but then we have the same thing with the fungus that got the bats. Which in turn after spreading mutated from bats to fresh water and dogs and humans. With C Gatti.

And bats carrying mutated SARS in Saudi Arabia.

And bees and frogs and dolphin's and via fungus in all but possibly the bees even though they have it may not be the only things killing them. Instead it may be what mutated in the bee just like it has to go from bat to dog to human.

This was before Japans disaster.
The bat mutation was noted in about 2009.

Re: In Hawaii, a coral reef infection has biologists alarmed!
Typical scenario. God creates a beautiful paradise. Liberals discover the paradise and flock to it spreading their liberal social malaise and polluting the land with sin and godlessness.

God destroys the paradise and plunges liberals into an economic and spiritual ruin.

Liberals flee to another paradise, and destroy that.

Rinse and repeat.

I see the coral death in Hawaii as the judgment of God on the demonic liberals who have ruined this paradise. It is the same process everywhere, Hawaii, CA, Oregon, all the European states. Godless liberals are the absolute ruin of Western civilization. They are like the goths and visigoths of ancient Rome.

Interestingly the visigoths are busy destroying America these days as well. The visigoths settled in Spain who then conquered Mexico and central America. To the extent that they still cling to the pagan cult of Rome and embrace the democratic party, they are destroyers. A few have come out of the darkness, but far too few.
With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible

Re: In Hawaii, a coral reef infection has biologists alarmed!
I've heard of this ... The strange fact that I'm going to add is not a pleasant one. But one that questions the origins of a known fungal infestation or infection , the one that is killing amricans and said to a result of "containated" syringes .... Yet the effect of this bacterial fungal coral infection is similar to the fungal meningitis outbreak on land ... Treating each of it's hosts as "coral reefs" and debilating the host within the same period of time. I wouldn't be surprised if the denguefecer which is also fungal bacterial infection doing the same all over the affected regions it's in ...
This sounds like a conspiracy theory just thinking it but the symptoms the coral reef exhibit are the same as what people experience when they've been diagnosed with either the fungal meningitis or the dengue fever...
It's not far fetched to think that the governments of the world would conceal the details if this were the case. With good reason of course, but that still poses the questions what is this ? And how far along is it in it's infestation process?
Note the movements along the reef indicate a predatory action (viral) and the same is to say for the f.m. And the d.f. Check it out and post your findings the potential for mass hysteria is emminent(pending further research)
