Most likely, they are phages, infecting bacteria. Could you imagine something that destroys the bacteria in our body? Finding "life" on Mars is one thing but finding it on our planet is very scary. Atleast this way the scientists can analyse these viruses and then prepare us for them if they do get out into mainstream. They other scenario is that these viruses should have remained down there and not got out, now they have a chance to get into mainstream. Its been done in the movies anyway.

I hope many realize that there are at least dozens of virus strains living in your body right now doing nothing/potentially helping you. It takes very specific mutations and properties of a virus to make it harmful to a person. It's only because of the mechanism of reproduction that a virus is harmful to a person, as that mechanism destroys healthy cells in the process. Spit in your hand, 90% likely that spin has at least 1 virus in it.
