Re: Climbing Trees Does NOT Keep You Safe From Black Bears
I remember when I went skiing for the first time out West (Whistler, British Colombia, Canada.) Amazing skiing, amazing trails and conditions, and even more amazing nightlife and walking village!!!

But, I was talking with a Ski Patrol on a gondola ride, and he was telling me to be wary of Black Bears (after I told him I prefer the trees; i.e.- "Glade skiing" or "Out of Bounds" skiing.)
If you encounter a Black Bear:
You can not climb up a tree, they can climb up and get you...

You can not try to outrun the bear, they can run up to 30mph, and they can also run downhill. If you try to "zig-zag" it will not confuse the bear, you will just get caught more quickly...

You can not "play dead." The bear will maul you anyway, and make you "for real dead"...

Your only hope is to scare the bear away, or fight it off.

He recommended taking off my skiis, and holding them in my arms and clacking them above my heads and screaming and shouting like a madman, alternating high pitch and deep booming growls.

Made me take notice!!
 Quoting: The Sonic Dreamer

I've had to scare off black bears before. Just act vicious, put your arms up in the air, and yell "RAWWWRRRR!!!" as loud as you can while you step toward them. Generally, even a boar will turn tail and run. However, if you do that with a sow (with cubs), you may actually provoke an attack. It's best to not make ANY aggressive move on a sow with cubs.

They are much like human bitches, and will ruin your day!

It is strange here too, WA state, the deer and kritters will just come in the house if I leave the door open. The deer have no fear and come right to the window to watch what is going on inside. Hang out on the porch. I saw three cougar cubs this last summer bouncing up and down in the tall grass out back about 20 ft away from my window. All my time in the mountains I never saw cougar cubs, and now right out my window in a small town.

Probably cousins.

Jk

I live in bear country and have had a 400 lbs black bear stroll across my path like it was out for a Sunday morning walk to church... unnerving if you're not use to it.

I got a photo of it if ya want to see it?

and the moose around here have turned vicious, down right deadly, in the yards, one scared me a few years ago, stomping all around the house, huffing and snorting. I think it wanted water, everything was frozen solid. Why would it circle around the house for an hr or so or it smelled females in the house.

Re: Climbing Trees Does NOT Keep You Safe From Black Bears
What is really bothering me about the black bear and the raccoon we have had here today, is their lack of concern for us.

When my son stepped out side the bear was rear end sitting beside him. My son opened the door where it was and did not see it.
When he shut the door and was talking to his father up at the other level of the house, he looked over to his right and the bear just sitting beside him like a massive dog.
The bear did not run it did not have any concern for him at all it just sit beside him like a dog.

The bear was coming up to us and sitting around us like a pet. It is not a pet it is wild.

We had the same thing out of that raccoon. The thing had come into the through the cats door. Then it went and was sitting behind a roll top desk in the den where my son sits.

It came out from behind the desk and was sitting on a table beside it that holds a urn.
It then went off it like our cat does straight over to the Sectional sofa corner table across it under the lamp.
Then down onto the sofa and off the sofa to the coffee table beside the cat.

My son went to get it to go out with a broom and it would not budge or fight him not even cringe. My son should not have done it but he reached out to shoo it with his hand push it to go out side.
It would not budge just sit there like no I do not want to leave I like it here.
Then my son went to pick the thing up to put it out side and it was going to let him pick it up.

That was when my son knew things were really abnormal.
They have no fear of humans.
They do not even have that instinct that they are not apart of our household or territory.

I have seen this one time out of a raccoon and it was during a rabies outbreak and the thing was sick and emaciated. It could not even walk straight or far with out staggering and falling.

This is not right this is not normal.
We have had in the last almost two months.
A fox the cops killed here in the yards even as injured as that fox was it made it up hill our of its way to our yard and shrubs to be shot by the police here.
We have had a bird come right in here through a low to ground cat door and help its self to my kitchen.
We have had two strange cats and act like they have know us all their life even born here.
A raccoon and a bear.

Where is their sense of out of their place?
Their sense of fear for adult humans even in confined unknown space like our house?

Where is their defense to us trying to push them with a broom and move against them to push them away and out?

This is abnormal.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22054163

Its a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. In the last days wild animals will be unleashed on humans, to rip them to shreds as part of the judgments of God.

"Come, all you beasts of the field,
come and devour, all you beasts of the forest!" Isaiah 56:9

Revelation 6:8. "And I looked up and saw a horse whose color was pale green like a corpse. And Death was the name of its rider, who was followed around by the Grave. They were given authority over one-fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword and famine and disease and wild animals."

Yup judgment by enraged wild animals is coming soon. Be afraid, be very afraid, but fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Meh something isn't right in that video. Bear have an excellent sense of smell and those bow hunters sure as hell smelled like people. My guess is they had sprayed anise or bacon grease on the tree or their stands, which masked their scent. The barrel you see is a bait barrel used to bait the bear into the area.

Re: Climbing Trees Does NOT Keep You Safe From Black Bears
Black Bears are NOT dangerous! Even if they charge you just stand your ground, don't run or flinch and they'll stop last minute and then run off. Worst case scenario they'll test you like the people in the tree. A grizzly though you might want to be a lot more careful with. As they don't scare as easy. And you are infinitely safer up in a tree than you'd ever be on the ground. Even if you're off the ground like 8-12 ft that would protect you from most animals. fyi

Anyway, those two should leave them alone. Bears have a right to live same as people.

its a small bear thats why they didnt want to shoot it also the bear ran up the tree since the bigger bear was going to kill and eat it since that is what they do.The bowhunters did just what they should have besides a blow to his nose with a hard right would have sent him packing a bear has a nose like a pig they dont like getting hit in the nose.

Black bears are almost as agile and swift as a squirrel when it comes to climbing in trees !

I once toke a lunch break at the base of a tree with a black bear sitting at the top section of that tall tree !

and a week before that in the same orchard, early in the morning, I went for a dump ,dug my self a hole and stood there doing my thing when suddenly , the same bear shown up at the end of a row of prunes (30 feets away from me), he sat there and looked at me taking my dump ,lets just say, i was in a very bad position, with my pants down !

s226 tounge

Afterward, I felt very lucky he did not came at me !

If bait is legit for fishing, it's good for hunting. :)

Even if bears are out of season/off limits in that area, if you have to save your life or the life of another, anything goes. A bear can be taken with a bow, though not from 1 ft away obviously.

Yeah I have noticed a change from 30+ years ago. In those days animals were scared of people, it was rare to see wild mammals -- even deer. Last summer I even saw a wolf wandering around the streets of Tofino like a stray dog. Jeez, never seen one in my life! Cougars still keep their distance, though.
