Aren't black bears a protected species?

Anyway, those two should leave them alone. Bears have a right to live same as people.
 Quoting: Bluebird

Most likely was a mama bear and she didnt want them around and was trying to scare them.
If she had wanted them, she would have done so and all they'd have found was the camera with two dead bodies.
Funny how all these skitzos on here say they'd have blasted her. They think the answer to everything is just kill kill kill. Looks like they are going to get their wish with what is coming. Nature has a way of EVENING the SCORE.
They will soon see that killing is NOT the answer and that the answer lies in communing with nature.
Sadly they will have to go thru the flame to see that.

Most sensitive part of a bear is their nose. If they get too close, a good smack on the nose will send them running. It's as bad a kicking a guy in the nuts for a bear.

I got that advice from someone who works on an island filled with bears up in Alaska. A good smack on the nose and they take off. They won't even fight back. They'll want nothing to do with you after that.

probably not in season or might not even be legal at all in that area

also they look like bow hunters

might not have a .357 hand gun on them

also

such a shame to kill it

A 357 would be like a flea bite to black bear
it would just piss the bear off
did you notice how fast they run

Re: Climbing Trees Does NOT Keep You Safe From Black Bears
I remember when I went skiing for the first time out West (Whistler, British Colombia, Canada.) Amazing skiing, amazing trails and conditions, and even more amazing nightlife and walking village!!!

But, I was talking with a Ski Patrol on a gondola ride, and he was telling me to be wary of Black Bears (after I told him I prefer the trees; i.e.- "Glade skiing" or "Out of Bounds" skiing.)
If you encounter a Black Bear:
You can not climb up a tree, they can climb up and get you...

You can not try to outrun the bear, they can run up to 30mph, and they can also run downhill. If you try to "zig-zag" it will not confuse the bear, you will just get caught more quickly...

You can not "play dead." The bear will maul you anyway, and make you "for real dead"...

Your only hope is to scare the bear away, or fight it off.

He recommended taking off my skiis, and holding them in my arms and clacking them above my heads and screaming and shouting like a madman, alternating high pitch and deep booming growls.

Made me take notice!!
 Quoting: The Sonic Dreamer

The ski patroller was having you on. In the wintertime both black and grizzly bears hibernate so you won't see them during ski season.

Although I don't live there any more, Whistler is my home town and the bears of Whistler are so well studied and tracked that they all have names. One bear in particular so endeared herself to Whistlerites that she had an obituary and memorial ceremony (and Facebook page) when sadly due to her habituation to humans and their garbage she became aggressive and had to be put down.

I always thought it was cubs who climbed trees and adults who did not (too heavy). This one was light enough. Anyways, it could have been he or she was climbing the tree to escape that other bear and was as shocked as the guys to realize it was occupied.

Re: Climbing Trees Does NOT Keep You Safe From Black Bears
Someone mentioned cinnamon bears. Have run into lots of bears and only one cinnamon - most beautiful bear I had ever seen. Also, by far, the largest I've ever seen. He was a reddish-tan and absolutely stunning. I've searched for pictures of something similar & even pics of cinnamon bears don't match him perfectly but I assume that is what he was for lack of a better match. He had no other color other than a beautiful, even reddish tan.

I was out in my front yard when I heard "clicking toenails" on the driveway pavement behind the parked cars and thought it was my dog escaping from back yard. I ran around the cars yelling for my dog and there was this beautiful bear staring at me just a few feet away when I was finally able to stop from my dead-run.

He cocked his head and gave me a look as if to say, "Dumb-ass! You really think you can take me?" since I was the one who had "charged" him. But he didn't make a move - just stared at me. I froze and just stared back. He could have taken one step and would have had me. I could have reached out and touched him. He was huge!

I finally started talking to him softly and backing up. I thought he had me. But I was able to back up to front door, about 15 feet behind me, without him making a move towards me but didn't go inside. I was mesmerized by him and couldn't stop looking at him. So beautiful. We stared at each other for another several minutes, at a safer distance then, and then he turned around & went back up drive-way.

I'll never forget him. He was one of the most beautiful creatures I had ever seen. His fur glistened in the sunlight and his huge face was different than the other bears - idn, more "chiseled" & well-defined & nose seemed longer. Absolutely beautiful.

That's what happens when animals are used to humans being around, they aren't afraid of them.. Black Bear are known for hitting the road way before you even know they are there.

Re: Climbing Trees Does NOT Keep You Safe From Black Bears
For what its worth, I have a friend that met this guy who was mauled by a bear in Canada and the story about what happened is beyond weird. He has one arm that is totally permanently fucked up from the mauling.

The guy was riding his bike on some trails in Canada and that's all he remembers before waking up in a hospital.

And here's the story of the people who found him: the group of hikers that found him was walking down a trail and saw a mangled bike on the side of it. Then they heard weird sounds, like strange grunting, and they saw a trail in the dirt, like something had been dragged through the dirt. They made their way towards the grunting sound and they saw a big black bear burying a man in the dirt. The bear was burying the guy LIKE A BONE to save for later! The guy was unconscious and his arm was all mangled. I honestly don't remember what they said about what happened to the bear. All I know is that they were able to get the guy away from the bear and get him to a hospital.

Not shit. This is a true story.

That said, I also have a friend that owns a property deep in the mountains and he sees bears come up all the time and root around in the grass like squirrels. He lays out on his lounge chair and they come within feet of him and he isn't scared of them, nor they of him. He said they are kind of like squirrels. But squirrels you do not approach. I think unless they are starving, they will leave you alone. So different times of the year, they will react very differently to humans. You don't want to be around them when they are coming out of hibernation.

You just watched the "rednecks" the liberals idiots on this site make fun off. They were cool as cucumbers in the face of danger. They never even budged, just sat there with a 300 pound bear in the tree with them. My family is just like these guys.

Not a liberal northeastern or California pussy on here could have sat there. Just remember this vid pussy liberals, next time you think you are superior to any redneck anywhere anytime. When all hell breaks loose in the cities and you want to flee the hell you voted for and put in the White House, think twice about bugging out to good ole boy territory. You had better come bringing gifts, mofos.

Try waiting five hours in the NYC port authority bus station from 1AM till 6AM. You've been awake 30 hours finishing a job, you know that if you fall asleep for even a second you will have nothing left. You'll wish you where up in a tree surrounded by bears.

Animals are not the scariest thing around by far. Humans are far more dangerous.

Actually all bears eat when they come out of hibernation is grass for the first couple of weeks. They have to get their digestive system going.

Re: Climbing Trees Does NOT Keep You Safe From Black Bears
Somebody said you can't run downhill to get away from a bear... Actually if the hill is steep enough you can. Bears front legs are way shorter, so if they get too much speed on a slope they go into a front roll.

If a grizzly is after you, try to get up a tree. If that fails, play dead. Grizzlies rarely eat anything they haven't killed themselves, although they will roll you around and take a couple test nibbles to make sure, so cross your fingers and don't make a sound.

Black bears can be frightened off but if it decides to attack, go for the eyes.

If either has cubs with it... tuck your head between your legs, pucker up and kiss your ass goodbye.
