The unfortunate thing about UK general practitioners is that they are over-worked and they have to be jacks of all trades. Since about 90% of all of their patients present with trivial and similar complaints (colds etc) they tend to go down the route of "most likely cause". Around about 90% of the time they are correct but that means 10% they are not. For me and my family this doesn't present a problem as being medically trained myself I can usually steer the GP in the correct direction. However for the vast majority of people they tend to accept what they're told.
Best thing I can suggest is that if you're not happy with a GP's or any doctor's diagnosis or treatment, get a second opinion. And a third if necessary. And keep on pushing.
