No, just the fact of the matter being they can't possibly handle the volume of claims in a manner that would justify fines.

I'm sure people aren't going huh I wonder if I should use my insurance?

In situations like this they will get a group of inspectors/adjustors and check out all their clients in the affected area, you probably wouldn't even have to call, they'd just show up and inspect your shit.
 Quoting: BRIEF

So then they would know when they could tear down. But still how long til a demolition crew shows up?
 Quoting: andawg221

Once the building permits are signed they won't be passing out fines...

over 2 years after the earthquakes in Christchurch, insurance haggling is STILL going on

many haven't been paid or had their houses repaired yet

many are living in their garage and using long drops (holes) as toilets

This is one reason you don't leave your house during a disaster. If you do not have flood insurance, you will need to burn the house down to be able to collect.

Then, take the insurance money and build on higher ground.

Government Tells NJ Hurricane Victims to Demolish Their Homes Immediately or pay $2,000 Per Week

November 25, 2012
After hurricane Sandy hit the east coast, all of the mainstream media sources were praising FEMA and the governments overall response to the disaster.
However, since the dust has settled and reality has set in, it seems that most of the actual help is coming from people in the community and the government is actually doing more harm then they are doing good.

This week, residents of one of the most hard hit areas on the east coast, Seaside Heights, New Jersey, were told that they had to demolish their homes or face heavy fines.
According to a local newspaper:
“This weekend, Joe Biden visited this oceanfront community in Ocean County, but local residents, some who saw their homes for the first time, were also greeted by demolition notices.
Dated November 13th, one noticed by a resident who wishes to remain anonymous, stated “Your structure has possible structural of footing failures.”
It went on to say the structure would be demolished by November 30, 2012, just 17 days from the notice. The order allowed the residents to request a hearing, but also threatened by fines of up to $2,000 per week if they did not comply with the order and fix their homes before the 30th.
To date, homeowners have been allowed to hire contractors for damage assessments, quotes, winterizations and insurance inspections, but no plans have yet been made for any reconstruction, leaving homeowners in a difficult position with very little time to decide what to do before their homes are demolished by the township.”

We aren't talking opinions. It's a fact, a bunch of houses and businesses got destroyed.

By your comments of you call and stay on top of them is simple stupidity to think that works in this scenario.

Sure it would work, unless you bought a nickle home policy from a guy working from the trunk of his car...big national insurance companies have thousands of offices...
 Quoting: BRIEF

Ok, let's even say for the sake of argument that's the case.

How long does it take to demolish and build just one house?

I'm guessing winter would make this process even longer.
 Quoting: andawg221

The fines are so people don't sit on their thumbs, once you get the ball rolling they aren't going to fine you...
 Quoting: BRIEF

It is my understanding that most insurance companies DO NOT provide flood insurance...I have been known to be wrong before, of course, but...if the people in the area did not have flood insurance, their houses WILL NOT be repaired by the insurance company, no matter who their insurance carrier is.

It is in natural disasters that our government ought to step in, IMHO. No local government should have the ability to fine these people...Period.

If you have that much extra falling out of your pocket, BRIEF, maybe you oughtta pick a family affected by the devastation and give them a donation instead of being so cold hearted today?

Yeah, flood insurance is optional, but the average joe or jane can't afford the extra premium. I know I can't. If my home ever floods, I am screwed. :-) Thank God, I'm in OHIO.

And yeah, they chose to live there, but really, who prepares for and expects disaster? We think about the possibilities, and most of us are naive enough to live our lives thinking, "it won't happen to me."

Have a heart, babe. Dig deep and find your compassion. I know it's there. :-)

Any one of us can be struck with any kind of disaster at anytime. We're not all pathetic dumb asses if one happens to us. Ya know? We gotta just live and hope for the best.

I agree with this.

Perhaps the smartest action this folks can take is collect their insurace money (those who have it), forfiet the loan on the property to the bank and walk away to relocate in an area that's safer then where they were living.

A person/family should plan on having an emergency once every ten years that will cost them 10K or more, so if you aren't saving at least a thousand bucks a year you are putting yourself and your family at great risk...so yeah, plan now because shit will happen.

Flood insurance is optional, and not available in many areas, so you have to ask...I have it as well as EQ insurance, which is also an option and most don't have it...

Most folks either don't realize or can't afford to. But this is very true!

Lots of people think I'll put that on credit or a payment plan. But I still feel for them when big stuff like this happens.

That's why I hate credit card and mortgage/loan officers...they push debt like it's a smart choice...

Debt works just like a smart investment, only in reverse...if a person stays debt free and invests and saves just the money they would have spent on interest, I can make them a millionaire in their lifetime...some are more ambitious than others, and I can help them do it without living in a box and eating rice and beans...

Re: Government Tells NJ Hurricane Victims to Demolish Their Homes Immediately or pay $2,000 Per Week
Some of you have no idea what you are saying!

Two generations of my family have had a house down there for 38 years. We have seen every snow storm, ice storm, rain storm, hurricane, and every likely scenario happen over that time. This was so devastating and destructive that my own eyes can not believe it. House after house, many primary homes, absolutely destroyed and collapsed. Almost every house on the block is condemned. Someone's deck was in our yard, and someone's boat was there too. It is like a bomb went off. The 70 year old guy 2 houses down from ours has been there all his life. A law abiding, tax paying citizen who kept meticulous care of his little piece of property and was enjoying his retirement. He watched every type of storm come and go over many years. When the water started rushing into his home in a split second, he ended up climbing up on his dining room table and had a heart attack.

Many of the people who live down there full time do not have a lot of money. And insurance companies will NOT offer flood insurance, because the houses are older and have "asbestos", which is absolutely bull crap. So in some cases, NO amount of money will get you flood insurance, so you don't know what you're talking about.

I could go on about the devastation, but only seeing is believing. It is heartwrenching, so try and have a heart. Many people's lives are completely destroyed.

And this, with a manufactured and steered storm MEANT to destroy, at that.
