Government Tells NJ Hurricane Victims to Demolish Their Homes Immediately or pay $2,000 Per Week

A person/family should plan on having an emergency once every ten years that will cost them 10K or more, so if you aren't saving at least a thousand bucks a year you are putting yourself and your family at great risk...so yeah, plan now because shit will happen.

Two generations of my family have had a house down there for 38 years. We have seen every snow storm, ice storm, rain storm, hurricane, and every likely scenario happen over that time. This was so devastating and destructive that my own eyes can not believe it. House after house, many primary homes, absolutely destroyed and collapsed. Almost every house on the block is condemned. Someone's deck was in our yard, and someone's boat was there too. It is like a bomb went off. The 70 year old guy 2 houses down from ours has been there all his life. A law abiding, tax paying citizen who kept meticulous care of his little piece of property and was enjoying his retirement. He watched every type of storm come and go over many years. When the water started rushing into his home in a split second, he ended up climbing up on his dining room table and had a heart attack.

Many of the people who live down there full time do not have a lot of money. And insurance companies will NOT offer flood insurance, because the houses are older and have "asbestos", which is absolutely bull crap. So in some cases, NO amount of money will get you flood insurance, so you don't know what you're talking about.

I could go on about the devastation, but only seeing is believing. It is heartwrenching, so try and have a heart. Many people's lives are completely destroyed.

And this, with a manufactured and steered storm MEANT to destroy, at that.

What do they expect? building a house 2 feet away from the water??

Don't need it, I know all about giving...if you win give it to a children's hospital or the big brother/sister program, make a wish, etc and save me the trouble, that's all I'd do with it anyway.

It's still the equivalent of living on a volcano and then being surprised when it erupts and wipes out the whole village...living next to the ocean is a risk that I'm not willing to take...

That's why I hate credit card and mortgage/loan officers...they push debt like it's a smart choice...

Debt works just like a smart investment, only in reverse...if a person stays debt free and invests and saves just the money they would have spent on interest, I can make them a millionaire in their lifetime...some are more ambitious than others, and I can help them do it without living in a box and eating rice and beans...

I've often thought how awesome it would be for the kids and I to ride bikes down to the volcano, um, I mean ocean and jump in a boat we have docked there and go fishing, but then reality sets in and says no, that's too risky...

No disrespect to anyone who lost everything there...but you should have GTFO if you really had a problem with not being insured.

Call me crazy, but even with this...one day, I'm going to retire to Myrtle Beach, damn it. Or maybe Myrtle Beach will retire to me. Either way. I understand wanting to live on the coast. The beauty, the seduction. :-)

My heart goes out to all of you. I used to think the governor was a pretty upright guy, but now?

I wonder if it would be to everyone's advantage to just pick up and go somewhere else. Now this might be a little off but if everyone left NJ, abandoned their properties, what will the govt do? They'd have to tear everything down themselves, utility companies can't bill you anymore. Govt has no one to collect property taxes from.....etc

Now that might sound cold but....I am a home owner and finding it harder and harder to maintain, taxes go up and services go down, so I just decided when the cost becomes unbearable, I will just abandon this house.
I told my mayor if my taxes go up just one more time I will leave it. At first he laughed (I guess he thought the city would end up with another free property for sheriff sale) until I told him before I go I will take out all the plumbing, heating, pull out all the wiring.. Burn all the doors and cabinets....then he said "oh you can't do that" I said I sure can. It's my property I can do whatever I want to it, and you will get no more tax money from me, no property to sell, and doesn't that tax money contribute to your pay?

Times are bad and getting worse. I am actually looking forward to just pick up and go somewhere new myself

I have had a "total loss" event at one point in my life..
7 yrs ago my house burnt down. I didnt even know if I had ins, but it turned out I did. my ins was paid to an ins comp in another province (canada) and my house was not in that province, the only delay, red tape, I had was, it happened on a holiday weekend. come tues I got a call from the local ins office and they were at my place within 24 hrs with chek in hand. I was shocked. The ins guy stayed with me thru thick and thin with the contracters dragging their butt, verbal quotes that were waaay over inflated by the time they got on paper, and double talking etc... he used his clout (I wont sign your chek) and got the jobs done as fast as possible. my world was in chaos and he lead me thru the minefield..

there are some good ins cmps and there are horror stories. if anybody wants to know..it was ING insurance,, I,m sure they have USA affiliates. they were good to me and mine. the fire was a (nothing but the clothes on our backs) loss.
yrs later I still have nightmares about it. but the adjuster was above and beyond anything I would have had expected.
