...

It is my understanding that most insurance companies DO NOT provide flood insurance...I have been known to be wrong before, of course, but...if the people in the area did not have flood insurance, their houses WILL NOT be repaired by the insurance company, no matter who their insurance carrier is.

It is in natural disasters that our government ought to step in, IMHO. No local government should have the ability to fine these people...Period.

If you have that much extra falling out of your pocket, BRIEF, maybe you oughtta pick a family affected by the devastation and give them a donation instead of being so cold hearted today?
 Quoting: StormeyGoddess

Flood insurance is optional, and not available in many areas, so you have to ask...I have it as well as EQ insurance, which is also an option and most don't have it...

As far as giving, I'm selective...they chose to live in an area where this was a possibility...just like with Katrina, um hello, the city is below sea level!
 Quoting: BRIEF

Yeah, flood insurance is optional, but the average joe or jane can't afford the extra premium. I know I can't. If my home ever floods, I am screwed. :-) Thank God, I'm in OHIO.

And yeah, they chose to live there, but really, who prepares for and expects disaster? We think about the possibilities, and most of us are naive enough to live our lives thinking, "it won't happen to me."

Have a heart, babe. Dig deep and find your compassion. I know it's there. :-)

Any one of us can be struck with any kind of disaster at anytime. We're not all pathetic dumb asses if one happens to us. Ya know? We gotta just live and hope for the best.
 Quoting: StormeyGoddess

A person/family should plan on having an emergency once every ten years that will cost them 10K or more, so if you aren't saving at least a thousand bucks a year you are putting yourself and your family at great risk...so yeah, plan now because shit will happen.
 Quoting: BRIEF

You're right. It's logical. We should put money aside, but sometimes...just sometimes shit happens. I'll be lucky to catch up at the moment...drowning in my own personal disaster, atm. Should have, would have, could have...

Not that I'm whining or complaining. :-) The only thing to do, is the best we can. :-)

You know I love ya, BRIEF. :-) Not everyone is as fortunate as you. These poor people lost it all. My heart goes out to them.

In my opinion, those people on the east coast have suffered enough. People don't DESERVE to be punished for wanting to live on the coast, for dreaming, for being naive, for hoping.

I'm a romantic, I know...so, call me some kind of tard and get it over with. :-)

Optimitard or Romantitard or lol, something. :-)

Some of you have no idea what you are saying!

Two generations of my family have had a house down there for 38 years. We have seen every snow storm, ice storm, rain storm, hurricane, and every likely scenario happen over that time. This was so devastating and destructive that my own eyes can not believe it. House after house, many primary homes, absolutely destroyed and collapsed. Almost every house on the block is condemned. Someone's deck was in our yard, and someone's boat was there too. It is like a bomb went off. The 70 year old guy 2 houses down from ours has been there all his life. A law abiding, tax paying citizen who kept meticulous care of his little piece of property and was enjoying his retirement. He watched every type of storm come and go over many years. When the water started rushing into his home in a split second, he ended up climbing up on his dining room table and had a heart attack.

Many of the people who live down there full time do not have a lot of money. And insurance companies will NOT offer flood insurance, because the houses are older and have "asbestos", which is absolutely bull crap. So in some cases, NO amount of money will get you flood insurance, so you don't know what you're talking about.

I could go on about the devastation, but only seeing is believing. It is heartwrenching, so try and have a heart. Many people's lives are completely destroyed.

And this, with a manufactured and steered storm MEANT to destroy, at that.

Most folks either don't realize or can't afford to. But this is very true!

Lots of people think I'll put that on credit or a payment plan. But I still feel for them when big stuff like this happens.

That's why I hate credit card and mortgage/loan officers...they push debt like it's a smart choice...

Debt works just like a smart investment, only in reverse...if a person stays debt free and invests and saves just the money they would have spent on interest, I can make them a millionaire in their lifetime...some are more ambitious than others, and I can help them do it without living in a box and eating rice and beans...
 Quoting: BRIEF

That is a great way to put it. It's almost worse, depending on the interest rate and other fees that make almost no since.

Me and my wife moved out at 17 so we've learned a lot the hard way. But this was one thing passed on from some elders. I use my credit card just to not carry cash. If I don't have the money I don't buy it.

My heart goes out to all of you. I used to think the governor was a pretty upright guy, but now?

I wonder if it would be to everyone's advantage to just pick up and go somewhere else. Now this might be a little off but if everyone left NJ, abandoned their properties, what will the govt do? They'd have to tear everything down themselves, utility companies can't bill you anymore. Govt has no one to collect property taxes from.....etc

Now that might sound cold but....I am a home owner and finding it harder and harder to maintain, taxes go up and services go down, so I just decided when the cost becomes unbearable, I will just abandon this house.
I told my mayor if my taxes go up just one more time I will leave it. At first he laughed (I guess he thought the city would end up with another free property for sheriff sale) until I told him before I go I will take out all the plumbing, heating, pull out all the wiring.. Burn all the doors and cabinets....then he said "oh you can't do that" I said I sure can. It's my property I can do whatever I want to it, and you will get no more tax money from me, no property to sell, and doesn't that tax money contribute to your pay?

Times are bad and getting worse. I am actually looking forward to just pick up and go somewhere new myself

I have had a "total loss" event at one point in my life..
7 yrs ago my house burnt down. I didnt even know if I had ins, but it turned out I did. my ins was paid to an ins comp in another province (canada) and my house was not in that province, the only delay, red tape, I had was, it happened on a holiday weekend. come tues I got a call from the local ins office and they were at my place within 24 hrs with chek in hand. I was shocked. The ins guy stayed with me thru thick and thin with the contracters dragging their butt, verbal quotes that were waaay over inflated by the time they got on paper, and double talking etc... he used his clout (I wont sign your chek) and got the jobs done as fast as possible. my world was in chaos and he lead me thru the minefield..

there are some good ins cmps and there are horror stories. if anybody wants to know..it was ING insurance,, I,m sure they have USA affiliates. they were good to me and mine. the fire was a (nothing but the clothes on our backs) loss.
yrs later I still have nightmares about it. but the adjuster was above and beyond anything I would have had expected.

Glad you had such a good experience with your insurance company. Fire is covered and they should have paid immediately and gotten everything fixed immediately. The trouble in this situation is that the majority of the people on the east coast do not have flood insurance and the insurance companies will not provide it, even at an inflated cost....

Which means, they have LOST EVERYTHING and cannot rebuild or replace what's been lost. Ever. It's awful!

It's a very sad, devastating situation for our FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS to be in. :-(

This must be one of those methods they are going to use to force people to move into relocation zones. Remember the map that has laid out where they want the population centers? If memory serves me right, none of the population centers were on the coasts. Zone corridor map or something like that, it might be called. Help me on the name people.

Flood Insurance is mandated by FEMA, and underwritten by various insurance companies on behalf of FEMA. Insurance companies do not & cannot write Flood Insurance in and of themselves, it is controlled by FEMA. If a flood is the source of damage, a flood policy covers it, not the home insurance. Resorting to coverage within the context of "wind" doesn't hold water. No Flood Policy, no coverage. Banks as mortgagees require it within flood zones, depending on the area designation determined by FEMA. FEMA is broke, as is the rest of the Federal Government, expect Uncle Sam to pick up the slack in 6 months to a year.

A person/family should plan on having an emergency once every ten years that will cost them 10K or more, so if you aren't saving at least a thousand bucks a year you are putting yourself and your family at great risk...so yeah, plan now because shit will happen.

Most folks either don't realize or can't afford to. But this is very true!

Lots of people think I'll put that on credit or a payment plan. But I still feel for them when big stuff like this happens.
 Quoting: andawg221

That's why I hate credit card and mortgage/loan officers...they push debt like it's a smart choice...

Debt works just like a smart investment, only in reverse...if a person stays debt free and invests and saves just the money they would have spent on interest, I can make them a millionaire in their lifetime...some are more ambitious than others, and I can help them do it without living in a box and eating rice and beans...
 Quoting: BRIEF

If these homeowners were already "underwater" in the sense of owing a big mortgage, and then the collateral (the house) got destroyed, then it's more like the lender's problem.

They can "just walk away".

But I don't think the Jersey shore was that kind of community, many of these were long-time residents who owned free and clear. Otherwise Obama wouldn't have sent the storm their way.
