Quoting: mrclean Greg Sorber/Albuquerque Journal, via Associated Press Natalie Gomez, the sister of Alan Gomez, who was killed by the Albuquerque police, attended a rally last year protesting the use of lethal force. The investigation, which comes after a preliminary federal inquiry into the department, will focus on accusations that officers used excessive force, including unreasonable deadly force, when dealing with civilians. [link to www.nytimes.com] Pay attention to the details. The last line refers to "civilians". WTF? We are talking about citizens or people, not "civilians". Cops are civilians too, though you wouldn't know it from the wording. MILITARY refers to itself vs. civilians. This "us vs. them" is what's causing the cops to see themselves as other than "normal people", and as a protected class. This needs to change. ABQ cops may have a difficult job, but nobody ever said that being a cop was easy. The important thing is to do it fairly and respectfully, while doing it legally. |
