They actually gave us our last month of rent free. They bought my wife out but didn't include me (the co head of household) on the contract.

seems they always want a free paint job and new carpet with your deposit even when its not necessary; have to be sure on move in to get lots of pictures.

We literally took 300 pictures.

It was cleaned like it had never been lived in.

But yes, for most people deposit is more like a gift to the landlord.

In Japan they call it Key or Gift Money

In most states they have a law about how long the landlord can hold your deposit after you move.

Assuming you have proof of them knowing your new address. It used to be you had to send it certified, but now you can record it.

We videotaped our envelope with the keys in it and our new address written on the envelope and dropped it in the offices rent box.

They are straight forward huh?

It's literally the money you give for the honor of receiving a key to your apartment.

They sent us a letter for the "damages" like 60 days after we moved.

It's supposed to be less than 30, so they dated the letter for the last day they would have still been in the clear. But it obviously was postmarked for a different date.

I sent a letter back explaining it was well past the time frame and none of the damages were from us and not our apartment. And also pointed out they dated the paper for a different date than they mailed it.

I included my phone number and signed it co head of household.

They must have thought since they bought my wife out, it included me.

But obviously they can go after one or both and same way back at them.

That seems unreal compared to what we do over here!
