I totaly agree, I have met some who do not know how to change a light bulb because they did not know which way to turn it. Another one stayed in a new cottage and stayed there two weeks before telling the landlord he had no hot water in the shower, he had it in the kitchen and bathroom sink but not in the shower, upon examination the hot and cold pipes were in the wrong place so when he turned on the hot only cold came out. Duh would not the ordinary person just try the other tap first. I have met some real winners in my life time.

A college course consists of a lecturer, a textbook, homework, and exams. Why cant all that be learned online?...Or by DVD's?

Brick and mortar college is no longer necessary, but the scam remains in place because there is a lot of money at stake. The government allows it to go on because the Communist brainwashing taking place in universities serves the interest of big government.

We need more online universities ...learn at your own pace...and then show up at a central location to take an exam.

A bachelors in engineering is a professional degree. It does qualify one to be an engineer. Let's be honest, though. These aren't the engineers that build dams, do aerospace research (no dumb ass, physicists aren't the primary aerospace researchers, certainly not in an R&D environment), or other significantly complicated projects.

These people design sewage drain systems for small cities, problem solve industrial plant equipment processes, and other such middling tasks. These aren't the guys that worked on Apollo.

Seriously, how capable is an engineer expected to be after 8 semesters of college?

I agree (for the most part) but it really depends on the Field. One thing you get from University (not necessarily College) is the "experience" and influx of different Culture and Ideals. You are 'exposed' to things which make you ponder and often see the World differently.Break away from ethnocentric World views.

But alot depends on your major and yourself. Those kids who went to High School and merely memorized will do fine but learn little. others will take small exposure to new ideals and "run with it".

I am College Educated and the smartest person I know is a Garbage man (seriously) who barely graduated High School. Guy makes me look daft and foolish and is so informed about a plethora of topics that it is mind blowing.

There should be a fast track degree alternative that allows a person to skip courses based on exam results. Similar to CLEP tests, but more aggressive. This would reward people that study and learn on their own time. It would also make real life experience more relevant to a degree.

To state the obvious for OP--it depends on the school, the degree, and the student. One can waste years and a lot of money, or get an excellent education for much less money. Much depends on individual effort, and what a person does with the education.

For some vocations college is an expensive union card; in others it's a prerequisite to doing much useful.

There are idiots with multiple college degrees and extremely smart people without them.

If you lined up hours early to shop on Black Friday, you're an idiot regardless.

Yes, physicists are the primary researchers. There are multiple fields within the field of engineering. The fact that you pool them all together means that you know nothing.

Civil engineers build dams, buildings, bridges, etc. Mechanical engineers build airplanes, HVAC systems, etc. Computer and electrical engineers build computers, electrical grids, etc.

So if engineers with Bachelor's degrees don't work on stuff like Apollo who does?

The number of shills on this thread speaks to the veracity of the OP's post. I'll go a step further and say that the worst thing about most people who have been subjected to a lot of "education" is that they love to lord it over their peers; they think pieces of paper prove they're better than other people. In my case, it took me years to unlearn everything they "taught" me in college and to rebuild my knowledge base and ability to think critically, from the ground up. I know a great many people with high IQ's who don't know a fucking thing about how the world around them actually works. They use their big brains to polish endlessly the walls of the box TPTB have built for them.

Re: The Fact That You Graduated College Doesn't Mean That You're Smart.
All you did was memorize and apply information in a totally non-creative way, and computers can do that way better than you can. So completing college only proves that you're almost as intelligent as a really cheap computer. Furthermore, the fact that you paid thousands of dollars to learn information that is freely available on the internet proves that you were duped. Still feel superior to people who decided not to hop through hoops, memorize tons of useless information, and pay thousands of dollars for a piece of paper that only makes slave drivers more likely to put you to work?

Innovation is the true mark of intelligence. Only those who innovate move humanity forward. So instead of memorizing tons of information that you could easily just look up on the internet when needed, innovate. Create new stuff, new ways of thinking, and new ways of doing things. Put your brain to work by flexing its creativity, and leave your mark of intelligence on this planet while advancing its inhabitants.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 911426

angry much? its what you make of it . your reasoning is sophomoric at best. i never graduated but i retained and still used much of what i learned. i wouldnt trade my education for anything. it is not all regurgitation of limited paradigms of thought. many schools, teachers, programs teach how to think and be creative. only a person who hasn't experienced a good education could say such a vast uninformed generalization.

No. Four semesters and then some are devoted during undergrad just to learn foundational knowledge of biology, anatomy, and chemistry. Most aspiring doctors never make it to medical school.

I have old college friends who are engineers (mechanical and industrial). I know what they do. While their jobs require education, in most cases they could as easily be done by a high school graduate with some years of experience. Incidentally, they work under engineers with more advanced degrees (the ones responsible for what happens). Except for one whose job isn't particularly complex.

I'm not saying there aren't great and capable engineers with just a bachelors. I'm just saying that 4 years of college can't make anybody unaproachably intelligent in a field compared to an experienced skilled worker in the same field.

I'll tell you one more thing about engineering. Engineers need to take a physics course called Mechanics. In that course there is a running joke that says if you can complete that class you become an engineer. If you can't then you become a medical doctor. In other words, engineers are the smart guys of the bunch. They are smarter with a Bachelor's degree than someone with a doctoral degree in medicine. Sorry.

Medical doctors usually get easy Bachelor's degrees like history. There isn't any biology or anything studied as an undergrad which helps them in medical school. Don't try to argue pre-med because most doctors do not go the pre-med route.

Engineers, on the other hand, devote all eight semesters to engineering. The first four semesters are math and science courses which form the foundation for the second four semesters which are all engineering courses. Engineering undergrad curriculum is different from all other undergrad curriculum. While non-engineering undergrads are studying general education courses like history and biology, engineers are studying math and science. Get a clue. You are just jealous that your friends are engineers and you are a high school dropout. Loser.

Loser.

Don't get pissy just because your engineering degree earned you a spot in a chicken factory working on the conveyor belt system. Where the fuck did you get the idea that doctors don't do pre-med? Sure, some med schools might let students in with history degrees..... mostly in Venezuela.

I completed my masters last year and am working on a Ph.D. I did a B.Sc in Geography (GIS) and History with a minor in biology, as well as a BA in Anthropology with a minor in Geology. I also hold a certificate in osteology from the UK. Archeology is my thing.

Re: The Fact That You Graduated College Doesn't Mean That You're Smart.
College is the period before you become a corporate slave.

Funny , I just heard some MCworkers saying the same thing while flipping burgers. They had such a laugh. Hell no, they will never be a slave to the "man" doing things like owning Homes and having cars and Retirement and other silly things.

Hell no. They have that good life of freedom (unlike us slaves) where they never own shit and eat with foot stamps.

...Anyhow.

BTW- Since we are essentially ALL CORPORATE SLAVES (except for a few very lucky or crazy individuals who own their own business- In which case they are a Slave to the market and their consumers and Employees)wouldnt you rather be the "Uncle Tom" than the "Tyreece"? Sleeping indoors beats the hell out of the barn, does it not? And usually (in my experience) the higher up on the food chain, the better treated, less work and more money are the rewards.

I don't consider myself "Very Lucky" to have started and own my own machine shop as it took years of blood sweat and tears to get the thing up and profitable. Crazy? Maybe. After putting in full 40hr weeks for "The Man" then working my shop for another 40-60hrs a week until I was set to go full time on my own one might call me crazy. I also don't feel I am a slave to the market, but see the market as a challenge. I look at other products in my niche and try to find a way to make them better, and also ask myself how I can produce them in a more cost effective manner, and what does the customer want and expect. The same goes when I do jobs for other companies that send POs my way. I also work with the engineers of the companies I do jobs for about production processes and material specifications.

I am a Liberal Arts College Dropout. My major was business, but I soon found the first two years were to be nothing but High School type classes of basic study, and I would not get into the "Business" aspect until the last 2 years. I punted and entered the work force, then went to Tech School on 2 different occasions for 2 different areas of study. It worked out well for me, but the one thing I will say would have helped me that would have come from College is the network with others that would have been established. I have come to learn that in business dealings about 90% of success in the way of closing the deal is who you know and not what you know when getting your start. Now that I am up and established my name is out there, but it was a slow hard climb at first. Having a network of professional achievers from your college days would be a huge plus when starting a business.

"The Fact That You Graduated College Doesn't Mean That You're Smart."

All it means, is that you've had any remaining vestiges of common sense (that you may have had left after K-12) systematically removed, and replaced with liberal gobbledegook.

As capable as any professional who graduates from any professional school. What exactly does an undergraduate education teach a medical doctor about medicine? Nothing. He learns everything about being a doctor inside of 8 semesters in graduate school.

I'll bet that your boss is an engineer and that is why you keep putting down engineers. You are a fucking retard. Fuck off.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28667343

I'm not an engineer, I'm an MBA. So what can you do with your degree? Well, you can hang it on the wall. That's about it. Other than that it's not much good for anything else.
