Shotguns are a preppers preferred weapon of self defense as it can clear an area or scope out some game . There are a number of varieties lengths and colors . Not to mention cost effective both in price of gun and ammo . Also the ammo is versatile and inexpensive .
Having a few firearms that you're familiar with is more tactically effective than a large arsenal ( not to say don't have your undisclosed stock piles ) but a side arm carbine/riffle and shotgun are all the firepower any single individual would need to make a stand in a home or bunker but also lightweight enough to bug out and still maintain your defenses .

No doubt on that ... But the speed and accuracy of a semi ... It's like revolvers or autos (both of course) but yeah

Have you noticed you can purchase drums for shortie shells holding 25 rounds. And they are cost effective.
Reloading a weapon can be cumbersome so having an ample supply of rounds per clip could be an effective measure to avoid any inconveniences
