Re: Pitbulls
You really think if my dog was UN-predictable they would allow it to be a service dog inside a hospital and work around kids? Adults are not the only ones that get cancer?

Sure, some people can't handle the responsibility of training and socializing this breed. But you can say the same about people owning guns, some people cant handle that responsibility. Its not for everyone. But that doesn't mean the breed should be banned. This breed is also the most decorated military dog in USA history.

Research pit bull service dogs before claiming such insanity.

sure, why wouldnt a second rate country like the USA have second rate policies centered around "I love my pitbull"

You obviously dont know what a dog goes through to be able to be a service dog and be around kids like this. The dog is tested in so many ways, they pull at its face, they do all sorts of messed up things to see its temperament. They don't just say, oh wow he can smell cancer, lets put him around kids!

A bunch of UN-educated morons.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26176985

Okay, so your pitbull was put through a long line of tests to make it able to qualify as a service dog. So therefore your pitbull is likely a very safe dog. That is certainly very plausible and I won't disagree.

No one is saying all pitbulls are dangerous. Just that most are based on genetics. If your dog was able to go through many tests to be accepted into a program, then your dog is likely very safe. And much more than most pitbulls. Just like humans, dogs have personalities and some humans are much more docile than others.

No one here is saying all pitbulls are bad. But people need to take into consideration that pitbulls in general cause the most problems with attacks among all breeds of dogs and the problem is getting worse because many people who own pitbulls are generally people who are poor, who do not fix their dogs because they are poor, and the breed is flourishing due to that fact.

You can call us morons for mentioning all these things. But you need to use some common sense too. You might have a unique pitbull by its demeanor. That is a possibility.

Even so, I still wouldn't trust it too much.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27747263

How can you say "no one here is saying all pit bulls are bad" when the majority here that are against want a breed ban? Thats where I get pissed off.

Hey, I think all morons should be euthanized. But at least I know there are morons in every culture, every country, every race and economic class. I mean, just look at this thread, right?

Never, in fact my pit bull is a service dog. There are thousands of pit bull service dogs. This thread just shows the ignorance of people.

Thank my dog for helping diagnose cancer in hospitals before you label it a killer.

You are welcome for its service haters....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26176985

Many dogs can diagnose cancer and other illnesses. Not just pitbulls. And you obviously have not looked into the genetic characteristics of terriers in general. Pitbulls being more dangerous than other terriers based on their size and strength. There is a genetic factor. No one is saying people should kill their pitbulls. Yes, they can be sweet, smart, loyal and very attentive dogs.

But they are one of many breeds that can be unpredictable. Many people whose pitbull killed or maimed another person or animal never had any indication that the pitbull would behave that way.

I would love to see an honest pitbull owner come on here and admit that the breed is dangerous and should be watched cautiously and not put in situations that might post as dangerous. So far, people who love pitbulls seem to do so blindly. That is a big mistake.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27747263

How many have you owned asshole?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26860321

Funny you mention that. I have owned two for a short period of time, both pit mixes. I was working as a foster parent. I had only a couple of issues with each, not worth mentioning. Yes, they can be sweet. But they are unpredictable. That is problem. I have been around dogs, many dogs, my whole life. The only ones I have had problems with have been pits or pit mixes and there have been so many instances and scary experiences, but only with that breed. I just don't trust the breed at all anymore.

I am sorry for the people that love them. I understand love for a dog. But if you own a pit, please just be careful and cautious with them. For their sake and yours.

Your emotions are getting in the way of seeing the facts. This is not about dog eugenics or anything of that sort. At least not for me. I just think pit bull owners need to be smarter. I don't like having them in big cities with lots of people and other dogs. But I am not saying we should kill this breed or totally ban it. I just don't think it should be allowed in large cities. Live in the country if you want one. I just don't think they are safe.

And to go with your argument on morons. No one said pitbulls were retarded, they are more psychotic. They are just more unpredictably violent. Should we allow people who are unpredictably violent and/or psychotic to roam the streets? No, we would rather have them out in less densely populated areas.

If you have seen several pitbull attacks, like I have, you might feel differently.

Re: Pitbulls
I have been arguing against pitbulls throughout this thread, but I also want to stress that I value all dogs, even pitbulls. I don't want any dog being hurt, including pitbulls. My purpose in arguing against them is not to hurt the breed or supporting euthanizing pitbulls.

I just want people to be smarter about them. Seems so many people just blindly say they are great dogs because their experience has been that their dog or their friend's pitbull has been friendly towards them. Pitbulls have been domesticated and characteristics have been molded by humans. But we have created a monster in the breed that has a thin line of aggression and violence hidden in its genes.

All I am saying is that we need to be careful with these dogs so more people don't get hurt. Dogs are wonderful, amazing creatures, but they are not human and we have to be responsible with them in many ways. They are a gift and we need to treat them well and make sure we don't put them in situations that are dangerous to us or them.

I have a rescue Pit that's a real one. He's also a rescue dog and he's the best dog I ever had. He's also awesome with my son and other kids as well as other dogs and even cats. He looks just like Petey from Lil' Rascals but his right eye is all brown. He's laying right here by me on the couch. He's also awesome to snuggle with!

I got a Pit Bull b/c I lived in a condo and their high energy dogs and I knew it would help keep me active.

Best dogs ever!

Re: Pitbulls
First off there is no such breed as a Pit Bull. There are associations that recognize a particular breed of dogs that over time have become what they are. Second Pit Bulls as so many like to call them were bred not for fighting but for controling wait for it cattle and livestock and protecting the ranch or farm. All dogs can kill and or maim another dog or human. Some people or trash just aren't capable of being in control of animals or themselves for that matter and have no business even reproducing dogs or humans. So some of you will blame the dogs for what happens when you should be looking at the owners. Any dog or animal that is dangerous or exhibits those tendencies should be put down and yes that includes humans maybe even you. WAKE UP AMERICA

this pitbull story made headline local news about three yrs ago

local guy walks down road with his male adult pure bred american pitbull (oklahoma pink nose , sorrel jeep ) . he's paid a fortune for this particular strain as it is said to be the most aggressive. it's about three yrs old and he's had it from eight weeks old.

car full of his enemies pulls up , three guys get out, beat him to the ground while dog
watches. they decide he's had enough and go to leave. then the dog snaps, savagely attacking its owner on ground. tears off half his face, one eye and one ear then starts on his arms and legs .

guys who beat him drag the dog off and call ambulance, hop back in their car and dog follows them happily.

have talked to the now severely disfigured ex pitbull owner, one of the bites actually pierced his skull and crushed part of it. tore off three fingers, one ear, one eye and very nearly his foot at the ankle, which still may be amputated. took the dog about twenty seconds.

he can't get compensation as it was his own dog, that cost him $3,000.

one of the guys it took off with sold it before it could be located.

dog in that attack was only part pitbull .

the reason why banning them wont work is they'll just be called something else.

i live in rural area, many folk have super aggressive guard dogs that never leave their large properties.

have had one purebred american pitbull myself (again oklahoma pink nose male)

what people who claim they aren't a savage breed forget is they were bred

specifically for aggression. hunting wolves in the case of the particular strain of

oklahoma pink nose. terriers hunting humans in warfare is only a few centuries back

in their breeding

the words terror and terrorist both come from terrier, which literally means unleashed

war dog. mastif means mastered or leashed war dog.

of course these purpose bred dogs are aggressive and sometimes attack and kill

humans. it is largely why they were created.

the upside these days is no theif or trespasser will set foot on a property with one

Re: Pitbulls
I live inside a 17x19 foot cabin with my fiance and a full grown red nose pit bull named lucy. Lucy was a rescue.

If you can NOT do these things, you shouldn't own a pit bull. In fact, if you do not do these things you shouldn't even own a dog in the first place. But This is of up most importance with pits.

This is what Lucy goes through every day.

She is walked for 1-1.5 hours EVERY DAY before we leave. She is made to wear a back pack that has 2 full water bottles on either side. Pit bulls need to be exercised every day or they will begin to be frustrated an find ways to release the energy. Whether it be chewing, barking and so on. They are a working dog, were bred to be on a farm and hunt pig's and such, and they need to be stimulated. You should be walking your dog EVERY day anyways. Dogs are pack animals that when they wake up in the wild they stretch and go for a long walk together every day. Every dog needs this, but this can never be neglected with a pit. They have a high energy level and if you can't match that you shouldn't own one. Like I said I live in a 17x19 foot cabin that a pit stays in all day by itself. It is so drained after its walks that it has no desire to do anything but sleep all day.

Your dog must be socialized, you must bring it to meet new dogs on a weekly basis if not multiple times a week. They must learn to be socialized to cats, bunnies, squirrel's and so on. They can never be allowed to go into hunting mode. This is done easily with a leash and a command collar. When using a cat, or bunny or squirrels out side, any time an ear goes up, a leg goes up. They are corrected. They are never allow to go further than that. The dog can never chase and the dog can NEVER kill any kind of life.

Your dog must respect you and its boundaries. It must learn that when you have the door open, it means just that, that a door is open and the dog is not allowed to go out side. EVERYTIME the dog goes outside, before the door is opened it has to sit, it has to wait. Once the door is open, it must stay still until its is CALM. No excitement at all. At that point you can lead the dog out of the house, but you must be the first to cross the threshold and the first to come back in. The same when you got for a walk, the dog can never leave the house excited, it has to wait until it is calm before its allowed to leave the door. I can leave my door open, or when I open my door, my dog would NEVER run out. It knows the boundaries. The same with the back yard. You need to walk your dog on leash around its property. Any time it crosses a line that it cant go, the command collar is bulled and corrected. After a month or two of this, the dog understands the boundaries.

You must have complete control over its food and toys. We do this by hand feeding when the dog is new. If you have the bowl in your hand and feeding from the "air" then the dog never takes it as its own, there is nothing to protect. Every so often while feeding, we do it about 3 times a feed. You tell the dog to "wait", the dog must step back from you, sit, and make eye contact with you before allowing it to feed again. After a month or two of this, the dog can have teh bowl it self. But you must still do the "wait" command 3 times every times it eats. This time the dog has to willfully give up the bowl IT has in front of it, step back and sit, and make eye contact before you continue. The dog is never allowed to be possessive of toys in the same way.

You need to clicker train your dog for an hour a day, every day. Never use the same reward method. Do not always use food or the dog will only listen when you have food. We switch up between treats, her ball which is her favorite reward and just praise and petting.

Your dog should be perfect on a leash, it should never be allowed to lead you. The dog must always be at your side or behind you and can never lead. If you take the leadership role on early, this is easy. Always feed yourself first, then the dog. Always enter rooms first, always exist rooms first. Pack order means a lot and it must be followed.

The dog should also be crated at night. Lucy is not furniture privileged, she has a dog bed on the floor and a crate she sleeps in at night. We take the door off the crate, she is never locked in there. She goes in there willfully. They like a small den space of their own.

If you are not willing to do this for your dog, you should not own a pit bull. We call lucy an ambassador of her breed because she changes hearts and minds where ever she does. Like I said, if you do not have tons of experience training dogs, if you are not willing to do this or cant, you should never own a pit and I will go as far as saying you shouldnt own a dog. These are basic needs all dogs need and all dogs should be socialized too. The dogs that have problems come from owners who do not take this responsibility seriously. But that doesnt mean others who do should be banned from owning this beautiful breed.

Re: Pitbulls
Also I want to add, when you come home and your dog is excited to see you. You should never give it attention. It should only get attention when it is calm. I have to ignore my dog for the first 10 minutes, it hard. But by petting a dog and giving it affection during an excited mind like that you are telling the dog that it is ok to be excited like this. It is this cycle that will lead to a dog that jumps on people when they enter the house and so on.
