Also, I love my dog and did not get her to look "tough". She is a good dog who was mistreated and almost killed just because of her breed. I adopted her because it was love at first sight. As with any breed of dog breeding matters and if you want a pet quality Pit Bull you would go to a breeder dedicated to raising dogs with a good temperament such as show dogs if you desire an aggressive dog any random breeder will do.

With any popular breed, there is random breeding of the breed including breeding of fighting dogs and their temperament cannot be guaranteed. Look at the German Shepherd whose diverse breeding makes for excellent police and guard dogs as well as those in the Seeing Eye program and rescue work thus breeding is everything.

Labrador Retrievers also fall into the popularity over bred breed and there are countless examples of aggressive dogs these days and the breed standard states that they should be dog friendly and aggression towards other dogs is a disqualification in the show ring. Thus, your statement concerning this breed is erroneous and misleading.

My avatar is my Anatolian Shepherd Dog he is true to breed standard in that he is not aggressive but is always protective and must be “formally” introduced to new people. Since he is a flock guardian dog he is not dog friendly unless introduced to the new dog.

Most "pit bulls" are not aggressive by nature. They tend to be gentle, playful and loving. However, there are those that have been bred and trained to be aggressive. Even then, they are more aggressive toward other animals, not people.

Often, aggressive "pit bulls" have been abused and/or neglected. These are VERY dangerous.

In my case...
Our previous dog died - Golden Lab, 17yrs old, Old-age related problems.
A coupla months later, a friend's Pitbull/Lab breed mix was pregnant by their Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and as we were intending to get another dog, we got to talking, and I half-jokingly said I'd take one of the puppies, if there was a male brindle in the litter.
I've owned dogs all my life, and already knew that Bull-breeds make great family dogs when reared the right way - no research required.
On a visit to that friend's house a few weeks later, their dog had just finished giving birth.... I noticed that the date was exactly the same as my previous dog's birthday (30th May), and there was only one male brindle in the litter - so we decided to definitely take him, when he was old enough.
Being a mixed-breed, we couldn't tell at that stage, what he was going to end up looking like - he just happened to grow up to look like a red-nosed, red-brindle Pitty.

For all we knew he might have ended up looking like a Staff, or a Lab with brindle colouring, or anything in between - the 'image' of the dog's look, when fully grown, wasn't even considere - we wanted a pet, not a status-symbol.

Wrong again - I am dismayed when others think my dog is aggressive.

If I was asked to pre-judge a dog, I would base the judgement on what I know of the owner - Not what the dog looks like.

Pit bulls aren't a natural animal. They are a bad mix of American Bulldog and a Terrior.

Almost no modern dog is a "natural" animal, infact NONE of them are. Which is why you don't find DOMESTICATED dogs in the wild unless the fled into the wilderness. Pitbulls were bred to heard cattle, male cattle are called Bulls thus the name Pit'bull' was used to identify this breed.
Pitbulls were infact considered a generic family pet in the US for a long period of time, and they were often used as back "babysitters" because of their natural tendency to migrate near young and children (often using their body as a barrier between the child and approaching unknown strangers).
Rotweilers are a relatively old dog breed, bred by the Romans as War Dogs in the ancient times.
German Shepherds one of the most loved and adored dog breeds of recent times, unbeknownst to most people, were "created" very recently. The first German Shepherd that was listed as "German Shepherd" was done so in the late 1890s (meaning the oldest woman ever recorded in american history, she died in 1995, was born before the entire German Shepherd breed even existed).
Labrador retrievers are similar to Pitbulls in the fact that they were bred to be working and herding dogs back in the 16th century.


What I am trying to get at with all this, is that your whoe argument of them not being a "natural animal" is so utterly laughable, because being bred outside of nater very basis that created domesticated dogs, which is why you don't find domestic dogs in NATURE, you find them in civilization.
I was also pointing out that Pitbulls were not originally known the "monsters" today's society has made them out to be. It's only after Pitbulls were left in the hands of poor and unqualified citizens did they become what they are today. This is because they began breedings the dogs for what nost consider "undesirable" attributes, such as aggression and size. They were not bred to be pitbulls, they were bred to be guard dogs.
But anyone who trains gaurd dogs can tell you, it's not the genes that make a good gaurd dog, it's the training.

The majority of Pitbulls are still relatively pure and can be turned into fully functioning members of a family. However, this breed also has a high percentage of "undesirables" that are not of good genological lines.
