Why Is Space So Cold?

I assure you, space gets warmer the closer you get to the sun.

With all the ice on Mercury it might not be as warm as you think.

I know good question, you have all these hot suns and out there and you mean to tell me space is still cold, heck it should warm up sometime

I dont know uf it's cold or not I have never been theta, but what I can't understand is you know how we have day from the sun? How come space does not have day? It looks black, like a black sky. But why?

I reckon space is cold as it has no atmosphere. Even near the sun it may be cold.
Its just the earth and other similar planets have an atmosphere and the cosmic rays are able to transfer heat through these particles.

As altitude increases from the earth the temp drops...as does the atmosphere particles

You'd think the higher up you go from land (closer to the sun) the warmer it would get. Just the opposite

to make heat, and in outer space (apart from some rocks and
pebbles, here and there, floating around) all of the atoms
floating around are about 1 cm. apart from one another.

How about the moon as an example, it doesn't have an atmosphere (supposedly).


How hot and cold does it get on the moon?

As you may have learned, the moon doesn't have any air around it. The air that surrounds our earth acts as a nice blanket to keep us warm and comfy! But the moon, since it doesn't have this blanket, gets much colder than the earth — and much hotter than the earth. On the side of the moon that the sun is shining on, the temperature reaches 260°Fahrenheit! That is hotter than boiling. On the dark side of the moon, it gets very cold, -280° Fahrenheit.

space is neither hot or cold, it has no temperature cos it's void. There is no heat conduction or convection, only radiation.

But the truth is, you could jump the ship in space, even butt naked from one capsule to another, maybe 30 feet apart without ill effects ... you will radiate some warmth off but you then just drink hot chocolate afterwards

Complete non-sense, ice meteors have passed almost directly through the sun and made it out of the other side. Even 1,000 degrees C and it wouldn't make it, but more than one has that we've been able to see.

There is no effing "cold" in space.

Cold and heat are the function of vibration of atoms/molecules. In vacuum (space) there is neither - therefore NO heat or cold. The only heat is possible by the sun's RADIATED heat hitting a solid (or semi-solid) object and IT's molecules heating up.

The biggest problem in space is the getting rid of heat.
Radiation is not particularly efficient, and convection is non-existent.
(Principle of the vacuum bottle's heat retainage function)

Id imagine its cold, but at the same time, the radiation would fry you..

particles are too spread out to pass heat via conduction or radiation. Also no convection going on.

the particles are too spread out to refract light so you don't see a blue sky like we see on earth due to scattering of shorter wavelengths like red.
