Imagine all the mass of a star being crammed into a space a fraction the size of a period at the end of this sentence. The gravitational pull is so strong that not even light can escape it. (When we look at something, our eyes are actually interpreting the light that bounces off of the object. Since light cannot reflect off a black hole, it is literally impossible to see one. If you could fly a spaceship by one, your brain would register it as just a black-looking area.)
