if you do have an extra vertebrae and happen to need spinal surgery, choose your surgeon carefully and make sure he is fully aware of the situation. i would also insist he refer to the vertebrae in such a way as to avoid confusion w/other doctors in the future. ie. if you need a fusion on l6/s1, your records should state that, and he should refer to your fusion as such in your presence.
