Glacial ice across Greenland has since melted at much faster rates. At this week's United Nations Climate Summit, IPCC Chair Rajendra Pachauri warned of the "possible elimination of the Greenland ice sheet and a resulting contribution to sea level rise of about 7 meters. Without mitigation, future temperatures in Greenland would compare with levels estimated for 125,000 years ago when [historical modeling] suggests 4 to 6 meters of sea level rise," he said [PDF]. The combination of sinking deltas and rising seas will increase the damages caused by hurricanes and other flooding events. In the past decade, 85 percent of the world's major deltas experienced severe floods, the study found. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18280704 And there is not the slightests rise in sea level anywhere in Aus. Maybe Aus FLOATS.... some places will rise up and others will sink . Throughout history there has been a pattern . I feel we are about to go into a time of extremes with weather changes , storms and flooding . |

The new research concludes that Antarctica is melting, but points to the smaller ice sheet in Greenland, which covers most of the island, as the bigger and more pressing issue. Its melt rate has grown from about 55 billion tons a year in the 1990s to almost 290 billion tons a year recently, according to the study.
