When I left Canada last summer, milk alone was over $8/gallon and a gallon of gas was close to $5.50

Loaf of bread was $4+

I feel your concern OP, but MOST of the world is already paying far more than we pay in the USA

The problem is, that these recent government reports that claim "consumer confidence" is at a recent high, and that people have more disposable income (not sure who they are polling) are giving mfgs the confidence to raise prices now to match those they have elsewhere on the globe

I'm afraid you are only seeing the beginning of a series of sharp price hikes, bc manufacturers in the US have been eating much of the cost of shipping, production, oil etc of the past few years

and next year, if Obama is successful pushing through carbon taxes, VAT taxes and other taxes on his party's agenda, expect even worse

I am an independent, not sure it would be much different with neocons at the helm....just calling it as I see it

Day old bread store, you can buy a loaf of bread for less than a dollar. If you have an Aldi nearby, milk is cheap there & they don't buy milk that has been taken from cows that have been given hormones.

Here's what I got for only $19 at a Mrs. Baird Thrift store not too long ago...

It can be done.

Other than this, we bake our own, too!

Good deal! I only buy baked goods at the bakery thrift stores. $1.00 a loaf and sometimes 2 loafs for a dollar, and bagels, rolls, cookies, everything imaginable.

I can't even imagine spending what some people spend on groceries. Stretching a dollar is a way of life for many people, and I"m one of them too.
