Does not make sense that the ruler of the pit would attack his own. Feel like I am missing something.

What could these be? Drones? Imagine never living with any technology and seeing this and had to describe them. Bioengineered creatures? The sound of their wings in verse 9:9 seems to imply that these are bigger than drones in order to make a seemingly thunderous noise (big blades through the air).
What gets me are the teeth like unto lions in verse 9:8.
