Law
 Quoting: Anonymous 1342725

Wrong answer, do not have your daughter go into law. My cousin is an attorney (ambulance chaser), he said the labor pool is being flooded by the wave of people coming out w/ law degrees and there aren't enough jobs.

He has several young attorneys on his payroll not even making 40k.

Not law, I mean unless you want her to be able to pay back her loans and not live in the room where her bassinet was unt a il she's 40.

Yeah, okay.
Your cousin got into a career he isn't made for.

Yep.

No substitute for natural talent. When it's there, if it's accompanied by a work ethic, you'll own your future :-)

Unfortunately OP, and you won't like hearing this (the truth sometimes stings), but it really doesn't matter what she goes to school for since the country is broke and with the continued unrestrained spending and borrowing (money that can never be re-paid) our children have inherited the bleakest future this country has ever faced.

Jobs are being outsourced overseas at a record pace, the wealthy business owners are demonized by the press (who ironically and hypocritically are wealthy themselves) and are fleeing this country for safe havens. Spread the Wealth really translates to Spread the Poverty.

In the coming turbulent times, practical skills will be the most valuable. One poster said "they'll" figure it out in 12 years, so just keep borrowing and stay a "professional student". I wish I had that kind of optimism, but I honestly see it getting worse not better (a lot worse).

Certainly some optimism.

If things do get better, she'll be in great shape.

If things don't, we're all fucked anyways...even the electricians and plumbers :-)

Re: which college degree should my daughter get?
Okay. Sorry to say it, but government jobs are fast becoming the gold standard. Benefits, pension, next to impossible to get fired, more women in upper management, not as cut throat as private sector. There is generally a lot of competition to get those jobs but they are ALWAYS needing actuaries. In fact, in California a lot of the actuaries for the State are imported from Canada as they can't find Americans with the training. So if she like math and numbers, and wouldn't mind a cubicle job, suggest that she go into a field like actuary, accountant, or statistics and she can get hired pronto at the State or federal level.

1) Where do you think the money will come from to hire new Police?

2) What do you think government is going to to do to the Medical profession when they have a chokehold on pricing?...and salaries?
(look no farther than MEDICARE for your answer)

The school she attends is just as important.

For example the Ivy schools for law is more reputable than others. John Hopkins for medicine is more prestigious than most, The Juilliard School for music is infamous for the Arts. MIT and Cal Tech for the sciences

So your best bet is to have your daughter choose the school for the program it is most renowned for.

I have dealings with the oil and gas industry, and i cal tell you there is a serious shortage of geophysicists right now

[link to www.rigzone.com]

If your daughter gets her degree in an oil earth sciences, she can write her own ticket anywhere in the world

last I heard, every single graduate with a geophysics degree gets a job offer

within 6 years she will be earning over six figures, and most job openings I see for those with 10+ years in the field are for $200,000K plus

[link to www.classesandcareers.com]

Check out that list. There is also a serious shortage of pharmacists and actuaries (major: statistics) right now, but for my money, I would go with geo sciences...travel the world, gold plated pension, the gold ring

Screw medicine...that is no field to enter now.

I'm married to someone who comes from a family of surgeons and physicians, and they jumped ship at 20 to study Comp Sci and economics, right now earning more than most doctors as a Quant, without the liability and the BS of government imposed mandates

If you already have a degree., that's one thing, I would never encourage a child or relative of mine to enter medicine with this massive clusterfuck on the horizon

Meanwhile, as a geophysicist, you can earn mid six figures with only a bachelor's degree

Talk to those currently in the medical profession, many are looking to get out or privatize based on how they know Obamacare will affect them.

She might want to consider a specialized engineering program, also look into Nano technology. Possibly look for a college that offers a work study program where she could work in the field of her choice while earning credits toward her degree. Talking to someone who currently has a position in something that interests her is always a good idea. They can give her some insight into that profession as well as know upcoming trends. Unpaid internships during the summer will add to her resume as well as her knowledge base. Good luck!

Biology, with a Pre-Med minor although it is not a requirement.

Chemistry with an emphasis on Bio/Organic Chemistry

If she doesn't already perform volunteer work she should look into as it will make her stand out when she applies to Medical School

Trust me all of us who work in healthcare are concerned about Obamacare
