You have to understand the whole wedding ideal goes back to an era where there was no other valid security for a woman but marriage. Any other option was degradation or poverty (and most likely prostitution).

In our modern culture the whole "princess" ideal has been substituted for the earlier absolute necessity for a woman to find a husband. Now it's culturally imbedded that a woman has to have her day as a pretty, pretty princess or she has nothing to show her friends as to her value. It's a very sick thing. People spend what a poorer person could buy a home with on a single day...5 figures on a frigging dress they'll wear ONCE.
