I don't think the power would have come back on if it were an EMP.

EMP would have fried all electronics beyond repair.

That's what I thought too...once EMP hits, all the stuff is done.

There are soft EMPS too.
I saw a test on some show few years back they did with a rental car....and a military EMP. The car did run again afterward.

I thought it would be perma-fried....but this mini-EMP didn't totally destroy the car electronics.
...just a temporary power kill scenario.

It was on the Military channel.....that ultimate weapons show.
I forgot the guys name who was the host. He was a Seal for 10 years.
 Quoting: Burt Gummer

I think I may have seen that to. But I thought it wasn't EMP it was like a built in kill switch they thought they could put in all cars and if the police etc are in a chase they can just point a remote or w/e and the car shuts off.

They've also been developing microwave guns that work to the same effect if you know the cars vulnerable frequency. But those still perma-fry the vehicles computer I think.

I've said for years, and air traveling emp, unless initiated by the largest aerial nuclear weapon in the history of the world, will NOT kill electronics the way many think it will. It takes more than a current surge to kill ALL electronics, as evidence by computers turning back on after voltage spikes all the time. The nature of electronics says there is highly unlikely to be any one event that can actually fry all electronics, but may damage some of them.

Ohh, I'll have to see if there's anything about that on Youtube. Hmmm, I wonder if they would do a test run using a "mild" version so as not to attract attention. Did they have to do anything to get the car to run again?
 Quoting: Laura Bow

They had this "bomb looking thing" hanging from wires connected to a pole or poles over the car.

They flipped a switch and the car was toast.
I thought it was amusing that they did it to a rental car.

ahhhhh found it!!

 Quoting: Burt Gummer

Hey, I think I may have seen that on Youtube before, very neat! Funny about it being a rental car, but I guess they were pretty confident they could get the thing running again. I would have to wonder if the Russians would do something like this as a dry run where the power comes back up and nobody is the wiser?

Re: Powerful EMP blast in Veliky Novgorod, Russia.
According to this news article from Gismeteo [link to www.gismeteo.ru] Around 20:15 local time yesterday a bright flash illuminated the whole city. Shortly afterwards most of the city's power was lost for about two hours. Anything from television sets to street lights. As noticed in the video some car lights and the radio stopped working as well. Some people even reported their room light bulbs changing color through the spectrum and or showing some weird unusual lights.

The power company explained it all as 'A cat that wandered into a power transformer booth and caused a short circuit.' Must have been Nyan-Cat or the power company people are lying. What are your thoughts? It's way too powerful of an EMP blast to be simple lightning.

Personally, I think all nations are aware of what is going on and are cooperating with the U.S. Well, the ones that are not we know what happened to them. I believe they are trying to get everybody on the same page so to speak and they don't care how they have to do it.

Powerful EMP blast in Veliky Novgorod

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17120160

If this video DID come from the effected area, this only shows with even more proof it was NO EMP. If that was an strong enough EMP to blow out the city, every damn car on that road with a computer chip in it would have stopped dead in their tracks. As for the radio, the station itself could be located in that city and the transmission towers lost power.

That's not an EMP. That's a transformer malfunction. Huge difference.

EMP's kill electronics forever. Not just blink them out for a few minutes.

A UAV equipped with an EMP or DEW weapon can fly into or over a storm and use the storm to hide it. Very precise strikes using these types of weapons are possible. Communications systems are first on the list to be targeted. Targeting power generating facilities, substations, and communications towers, for instance, knocks out service to a wide area. No need to fry all the electronics.

"USSR Tested on 22 October 1962,(ABM System A proof tests) 300-kt burst at 290-km altitude near Dzhezkazgan. Prompt gamma ray-produced EMP induced a current of 2,500 amps measured by spark gaps in a 570-km stretch of 500 ohm impedance overhead telephone line to Zharyq, blowing all the protective fuses. The late-time MHD-EMP was of low enough frequency to enable it to penetrate the 90 cm into the ground, overloading a shallow buried lead and steel tape-protected 1,000-km long power cable between Aqmola and Almaty, firing circuit breakers and setting the Karaganda power plant on fire."

The radios went off simply because the transmitter power was interupted. The car lights did not even flicker, this was a spectacular transformer failure, no emp required. Also if it were emp, those systems that went off would not simply come back minutes or hours later, they would be destroyed by the pulse.
