Shoppers study ingredient labels to make sure what they eat and drink is good for them. But there is one ingredient label that is being overlooked -- the toothpaste ingredient label.

"You will brush your teeth 1,000 times per year or more, and each time you do, you will ingest some toothpaste. If you think that is not a problem, think again," says Dentist and Oral Health Expert Dr. Harold Katz. "Some of the ingredients in many commercial toothpastes are undeniably bad for you."

Here is a short list of the basic harmful ingredients Dr. Katz says consumers should know:

* FD&C blue dye No. 2. This dye is in many toothpastes, but the Center for Science in the Public Interest warns against it as it might be related to learning and behavioral issues, severe allergic reactions and other health problems.

* Sodium lauryl sulfate. The American College of Toxicology says it can cause skin corrosion, irritation and canker sores. In lab rats, the ingredient led to depression, diarrhea and death.

* Triclosan. The anti-microbial ingredient is listed as a pesticide and is used in OTC toothpaste and hand soap. But the Environmental Protection Agency demanded more research be conducted because of triclosan's negative effects on thyroid and estrogen levels.

* Saccharin and aspartame. Both are artificial sweeteners, and both made the Center for Science in the Public Interest's list of additives to avoid.

Make your own!

1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup vegetable glycerin
1 Tbsp castille liquid soap
A few drops of tea tree essential oil

I even hear coconut oil works well!

i am wondering tho if this will do anything to help my sensitive teeth. if there is a natural way to help that.
if i do not use the toothpaste for sensitive teeth, my teeth hurt.

i don't know what the ingredient is they use to make tit so your teeth are not so sensitive. i guess i do not even want to know because life with your teeth feeling like they are bring drilled without novacaine when you eat something wrong is pretty hard to deal with.

That is one of the best kept secrets in the world. Most people don't believe it, but it is printed on the package. It says to call the poison control center immediately if you swallow toothpaste. But, if you are a smart shopper, you can find tooth paste without fluoride in it. Tom's is usually available at the major retailers. You will need to read the label because not all of Tom's is fluoride free.

what is one of the dirtiest things in our bathrooms? toilet bowl? nope, it is our toothbrushes. always wash your toothbrush with soap and water after using it. a bath in hydrogen peroxide wouldn't hurt the brush either.
