In Saudi and some other ME countries, they do confiscate your passport, however the laborers are registered with the government and their own embassies, so their status doesn't disappear even if their employers tries to hide their papers. And they come on two year contracts where they are paid, so they are certainly not slaves who work against their will for nothing.

In saudi, non-muslims can't display their religion publicly, but that is the extent of discrimination against them there. In every other respect they are treated like muslims. The fact you actually wrote that last paragraph shows you really know nothing about Saudi, because as anyone familiar with the country will tell you, a white non-muslim American has way more rights in Saudi Arabia than a native muslim Saudi.
