Tax Issue
I was just sent a letter from the Illinois Department of Revenue that I owe $2500 from 2008. Apparently I forgot to file my Illinois taxes. Anyway, I looked up the return and see that I only owed them $495.00 after deductions, but they're charging me the original amount of $1700 + penalties.

My big problem is that I don't have $2500 to pay - no chance - especially within the next 30 days.

Anyone know of a way to get the amount reduced back to the original amount, or reduced at all? Or maybe get set up on payment plans?

Most States will allow you to file a LATE return with minimum penalties and interest attached SO FILE IT! By the way how can you look up a return you never filed? I would assume you never prepared it in the first place right? If you did prepare it but never filed because you owed FILE IT NOW!

Re: Tax Issue
I prepared it through an online service and kept the paperwork. I just looked at the paperwork from that period and see that I owed $495. I don't know why I didn't pay it at the time but I know I didn't. So basically all the paperwork was ready, but I just never mailed it with the payment.

If I do mail it with a payment of $495, is that good enough?
