| Anonymous Coward User ID: 1148772 11/30/2012 09:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'll bet you Menard's in Minot is trying to unionize and this is the conpany's way of undermining their attempts. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1148772 so they're undermining unions by providing a lot of benefits that unions fight for without the employees having union fees? most companies won't give you insurance, 401k, pto/vacation, incentives etc let alone a decent wage. north dakota is looking pretty good. the other states should take notes from what they've done with the state bank. too bad it's so close to yellowstone.. There's a catch... as always. Gotta get enough hours and time in before any of those benefits kick in. Good luck with that shit. And 401k's??? Pfft. Aren't those eventually stolen by the companies that offer them??? Naw. There's a hidden agenda going on here. |

| Goldi User ID: 8755634 11/30/2012 09:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I deal with people in Minot DAILY. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27967035 I dont know if it is the water, or the living, but they are some of the DUMBEST, most UNFRIENDLY people Ive EVER dealt with (keep in mind, I was a basic training training NCO..) It is COLD Theyre genuinely excited about their job being sold to Cognizant (look up what cognizant does, they actually believe their jobs are long term) YES, you CAN live off 26k in Minot. Its true, in the last year, it has flooded, and had blizzards so bad both times the Minot office was closed. I work for ING/Cognizant. IDK if this is "inside information" but Prudential Insurance is looking to switch to Cognizant as well. BUY their stock. I found Minot people to be very friendly just dumb as all hell! And the whole place was like 20 years behind the rest of the world. It's a toxic wasteland from the base so I can't understand why anyone, not born there, would ever want to live there. Not to mention the base has the highest suicide rate in the Air Force and for good reason. |

That possibly accounts for the shortage of workers considering the oil boom. I would find cold like that terrifying and I did manage to live in Illinois for 5 years. Wasn't easy, though. | Anonymous Coward User ID: 28792051 11/30/2012 10:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Its because of the oil boom in western dakota. Who wants to make 13 when you can make 30 plus on a rig. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28792051 Good point [link to nd.craigslist.org] There's truck driver jobs up the wazoo. Yup - I'm typing this about 70 miles west of minot. So what's the weather like in Minot today? The last time I was up there I froze my ass off. It's probably last decent week of the year. Should hit 40ish this weekend. This last week was teens and windy. Was working in -10 w/ windchill. |

If so I guess that wouldn't be too bad if you didn't have any bills to speak of. Stocking shelves is pretty easy work. Save your money for a year, set up a nice hmmm hmmm. And after all was reckoned, they would 'earn'/net 50-100 dollars a week for 50+ hours of labour. . . . --- We all breathe the same air |

Apparently, they will fly you there and back once a week, cover your housing (double occupancy, so you'd have a roommate), and I think per diem for meals. If you are just out of college or high-school, it sounds like it could be kind of fun. And who knows--maybe you would find a rig job. |

I would imagine the cost of your hotel room would be listed on your W2 under "benefits" for IRS purposes, and you might be taxed on the cost of the room as "income" even if you don't see a dime of that money? Menard's would declare your room a cost of doing business, similar to the wages they pay? Maybe someone who actually does payroll or runs a business could comment. |
