Quoting: wisc_natureboy "BISMARCK, N.D. - Home improvement retailer Menard Inc. plans to hire 50 workers from its headquarters city in Wisconsin and fly them weekly to staff its store in Minot, N.D. ... Menard said jetting in employees for weeklong stints and housing them in hotels is likely to be a permanent solution for that store's staffing shortage." Serious? I lived in Mindrot for 9 months. First time the temp got to 30 below I bailed when it warmed enough to leave. The only hills in Minot are the hills that are created from the bowl that its in. It is quite literally a hole in the ground. Recently the river flooded and the place I stayed while living there was submerged completely in water. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1148772 United States 11/30/2012 08:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Most of them will be out of a job after the Christmas season is over. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1148772 I don't know about that. The company owner referred to this as a permanent solution to his staffing shortage. WTF??? Minot State University is up there. These are the types of jobs students usually flock to. Being the suspicious type... I'm thinking that maybe what they're actually doing is exporting/importing a specific type of person that's had some kind of special training... and working at Menard's is only secondary... and temporary. Or they could be dumping long-term unemployed on Minot from another state. |

Or they could be dumping long-term unemployed on Minot from another state. I share your suspicious nature, however that does not appear to be the case here. ---- "Competition for the Menard jobs has been tough in Wisconsin. Pam Weaver, of Eau Claire, said her husband, Gary, had his heart set on one of the positions with Menard in Minot but was told Thursday that he wouldn't be hired. No reason was given, she said. "It's frustrating," Pam Weaver said. "He seemed disappointed." Gary Weaver, who was laid off from his job as a telemarketer several weeks ago, was back at the unemployment office Thursday filling out job applications, said his wife, a 55-year-old claims auditor for a health insurance company. "Who would have thought that we'd be in our 50s and struggling?" Pam Weaver said. "We're not the only ones. We've had three different friends who have lost businesses in town in the last five years." Zimbelman, the Minot mayor, and Menards store manager Graef said they hope some Wisconsin workers eventually decide to make Minot their permanent home instead of commuting more than 500 miles by air to get there." [link to www.jsonline.com] --- Now, your idea about getting folks with certain skills out there under the guise of a Menards job is an interesting thought. ;-`) We all breathe the same air. .-.. --- ...- . / .- .-.. .-.. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 28618054 United States 11/30/2012 08:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It varies from region to region quite a bit, but here where I live the minimum that a small family can survive on with any kind of decent life is about $30-$35k a year. Even then you're talking about having a single vehicle and not eating out much. I live in a place with a very low cost of living. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 28776472 United Kingdom 11/30/2012 08:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In response to the guy from the UK; No you really can't live on $26k a year. At least not in any kind of decent way. You could live in some roach infested dump and ride a bicycle, and you could live ok. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28618054 It varies from region to region quite a bit, but here where I live the minimum that a small family can survive on with any kind of decent life is about $30-$35k a year. Even then you're talking about having a single vehicle and not eating out much. I live in a place with a very low cost of living. Do apartments in ND have roaches? I would have thought it was too cold. I'm 58, and I have never seen a roach in any dwelling in the UK, and I've been around. I saw plenty of roaches when I worked in the ME, though. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 27967035 United States 11/30/2012 08:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I deal with people in Minot DAILY. I dont know if it is the water, or the living, but they are some of the DUMBEST, most UNFRIENDLY people Ive EVER dealt with (keep in mind, I was a basic training training NCO..) It is COLD Theyre genuinely excited about their job being sold to Cognizant (look up what cognizant does, they actually believe their jobs are long term) YES, you CAN live off 26k in Minot. Its true, in the last year, it has flooded, and had blizzards so bad both times the Minot office was closed. I work for ING/Cognizant. IDK if this is "inside information" but Prudential Insurance is looking to switch to Cognizant as well. BUY their stock. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1311324 United States 11/30/2012 08:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'll bet you Menard's in Minot is trying to unionize and this is the conpany's way of undermining their attempts. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1148772 so they're undermining unions by providing a lot of benefits that unions fight for without the employees having union fees? most companies won't give you insurance, 401k, pto/vacation, incentives etc let alone a decent wage. north dakota is looking pretty good. the other states should take notes from what they've done with the state bank. too bad it's so close to yellowstone.. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 28492103 Canada 11/30/2012 09:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | How can they not find employees? Where I live we have a pretty healthy economy. Despite that, jobs like these would be filled in days. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28618054 because its bullshit. another company scamming another angle. they have a reason. Heh, agreed. Times are tough and there aren't any jobs that are much more than minimum wage to begin with. $13.00 bucks an hour is pretty reasonable but I don't know what min wage is in ND. |
