Reno declares state of emergency | |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 1080525 12/01/2012 02:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I live in south Reno, and this happens every few years. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6622655 When we have heavy rain, ontop of mountain snow pack, the snow melts, rapidly, which creates a lot of run off. The rivers and creeks swell, and any low lying areas below, can get significant flooding. At least the snowpack wasn't that deep, so the expected run off shouldn't be as bad as last big flood, which was 2005. Part of mountain living, no one is panicking out here, just keeping a watchful eye. Yep. I was gonna say the same thing. I was in Reno in 2005 when it flooded. You couldn't really drive anywhere. We all just sort of walked around downtown. I used to have some video of the river flowing like crazy through downtown. |

Lots of sand bagging going on with the businesses in the industrial area of Sparks (next-door neighbor to Reno for those who didn't know). I was here for the 1997 and 2005 floods, I just pray people and animals don't get swept away this time. btw, Harry Reid doesn't live here (Reno), so if he's got something coming to him, don't send it our way! |
| Redpaw360 User ID: 11235712 12/01/2012 02:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | IT....IS....NOT....A....FUCKING.....ARK....STORM!!!!!!!! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28050179 GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What the FUCK is wrong with you people?!?!? Jeeeeez...this isn't even CLOSE to the definition of an ARK storm. Dumbasses. It will be in a few weeks, after the moisture keeps coming we will slowly get flooded out, like the old 'frog in boiling water' analogy, we are the slowly boiled frog. I'm in the PNW, shit is getting real here. The wind just went from zero to 45mph gusts and blowing rain. We have a huge low pressure storm off the coast, all the way to Alaska and it won't leave..... It just keeps circling, building for the last 2 weeks.... I've never seen anything ,like this before. It's like a huge hurricane that took root. A bit off topic but I worked at Atlantis casino from 1996-2001. Do you know how their business is these days? I've lost touch with my former co-workers (bartenders/cocktail servers). Quoting: Miggy TIA, Mig Ah, so you remember in 1997 when downtown was closed - with most businesses along 2nd St. flooded? Haven't been to Atlantis in a year but from what I've heard they're still holding promotions and slot tournaments and special events. They might be doing better than many of the other casinos, at least they haven't had to file bankruptcy (Silver Legacy). |

TIA, Mig I go every few weeks, it's crowded every time I have been there. Weekend nights, the parking lots are totally filled, long lines for the restaurants, and you can barely walk through the casinos areas, --business seems to be great for them, at least on the weekends. |

It was the most bizarre thing I'd ever seen. I'd only lived there a couple of months and decided to go out that evening to see Frank Sinatra Jr at Harrahs. When I started the evening at 8 PM all was normal. When I left the show about 11 PM the whole downtown area was flooded. I lived just off of Kietzke, near downtown. They have classed up most of the restaurants in the last few years, but yeah, the cocktail servers in the casino areas still wear pretty tacky outfits. I have heard locales complain about the owner, its too bad, The Atlantis provides a lot of jobs for the area, business seems to be good, why not treat your workers better? |
