Scientists say if and when that fault ruptures, it could result in a destructive magnitude-9 earthquake. The OSU geologists said their tests showed the recent earthquake added only a small amount of stress to the Cascadia fault. “What we don't know is the stress state of the Cascadia right now," said OSU Professor Chris Goldfinger. "So you add that small straw to that, you don't know whether you're about to break the camel's back or not." Goldfinger said it’s been 312 years since the last earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction zone. He said on average they happen about every 240 years, which puts us in the window for another one. IT WILL BE A 9.3 MAG Earthquakes move from South to North since the Pacific Plate moves North and West. In the recent M7.7 Earthquake on the Queen Charlotte Fault Earthquakes occurred in Alaska but not in Washington or Oregon. Since 1900 there have been (89) M8.0 Earthquakes but none between the Queen Charlotte Triple Junction and the Mendacino Triple Junction on the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Professor Dziak who works in the OSU lab in Oregon and has studied the Cascadia Subduction Zone has stated that a Future Earthquake in Cascadia will most likely be a M7 to M8 rather than Larger. Since 1900 the largest Earthquake to occur in Cascadia was M7.3 on Vancouver Island. The Mendacino Fault on the Southern Boundary of the Cascadia Subduction Zone is Seismically Active but the largest Earthquake to Occur on that Fault is M7.2.  |
