Dispersant makes oil from spills 52 times more toxic
"The levels in the gulf were toxic, and seriously toxic," Snell said. "That probably put a big dent in the planktonic food web for some extended period of time, but nobody really made the measurements to figure out the impact."

Is this in any way surprising?

Remember, they were told not to use it, but they did anyway.

It rained here the other day, so of course the cat's bowl (outside) got black stuff in it.

It never got black stuff in it before the BP disaster.

I live about a mile from the Gulf in Panama City.

We were told about a year after the spill that there was a several miles long oil/Corexit bar at the bottom of the Gulf 25 miles off shore.

Oh relax OP, I'm sure it just converts the oil spill into toxins lower on the list of the EPA`s priorities.

It makes what was at first wrong into something correct.

GREED--all so BP could keep down the size of the fines they owe based on amount of oil spilled. If oil isn't seen, it isn't counted against them. Monsters!

Re: Dispersant makes oil from spills 52 times more toxic
the dispersent is just like dishwashing soap, it emulsifies the oil, breaks it up into millions of much smaller droplets, so it can penetrate the skin of animals and be absorbed into them much easier. It is actually the mechanical functioning of the smaller droplet size, that makes it more toxic.

Detergent stops water from beading up, same as it does with oil.

Adding small amounts of detergent to water/fertilizer is good for plants, because it allows it to soak into the ground.

I suppose it would be wrong to not include some links.

Corexit 9527, considered by the EPA to be an acute health hazard, is stated by its manufacturer to be potentially harmful to red blood cells, the kidneys and the liver, and may irritate eyes and skin.[15][25] The chemical 2-butoxyethanol, found in Corexit 9527, was identified as having caused lasting health problems in workers involved in the cleanup of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.[26] According to the Alaska Community Action on Toxics, the use of Corexit during the Exxon Valdez oil spill caused people "respiratory, nervous system, liver, kidney and blood disorders".[17] Like 9527, 9500 can cause hemolysis (rupture of blood cells) and may also cause internal bleeding.[5]

Oh, of course. A harmful chemical that humans, animals, fish, etc are likely to be affected for years but it is no big deal.

Rot in hell.
