Supreme Court To Decide If Human Genes Can Be Patented In Myriad Case

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear, for a second time, a lawsuit challenging patents held by Myriad Genetics on human genes implicated in breast cancer.

The court, in an order today, said it would consider only the question of whether human genes can be patented, meaning it plans to dive straight into one of the most contentious — and elusive — questions in patent law, which is the difference between an invention and a natural phenomena. Opponents of the patents say they prevent researchers from even examining naturally occurring genetic material that companies have patented. Supporters say the law allows patents on any process that isolates a valuable substance, even if it’s naturally occurring, citing industrial processes to create useful products out of hydrocarbons and plant material.

If these fucks rule in favor of corporations, humanity is doomed.

Great, just great. Remember, once they get this passed, it's a very small step in altering your DNA with a retro virus and then providing the "cure" for the disease, which also alters your DNA into a form under the new patent laws.

And they will get away with it.

The patent offices of the world have always been the
blocker of human evolution .
They are more corrupt than you could imagine. The shitty technology we have now in 2012 has a lot to do with the patent office and the dirty lawyer fucks that work with them.

also, this hasn't much to do with blocking high tech but China's manufacturing firms always ignored the patent office. no one did jack about it, accept recently Barak Hussain did winge a bit, but that was it.

If it is your intention to free Humanity,
first thing you would do is RAID THE PATENT OFFICE..

I agree to this, actually.
In high school our teacher taught us about "designer babies."
we read an article on how scientists are working on making sure that specific genes are given to the baby. (i.e. blonde hair, good athletics, intelligent etc.)

maybe you'll be able to give your child traits that the two parent's don't even HAVE.

that would be just... unnatural... but so appealing to many, to want their child to be "perfect.".
but it's just so WRONG in my opinion... it's cheating. it's cheating nature. that's NOT COOL.

It's been going on for years already it seems and this is how they always do it, do it for years and then create some public scene where it looks like they are debating it for the first time.

[link to www.genome.gov]

Patenting genetic discoveries has proven controversial over the past several years. There are now patents associated with around a quarter of the genes in the human genome. Patents are extremely valuable to those developing products based on genetic discoveries. They are issued to encourage innovation, and provide protection to allow those investing in genetic research the opportunity to maximize the profit from their investment.

Edit: "Next" was released in 2006.

Note: His last two novels (posthumous) are a strange departure from his usual narrative. The only useful information you will find are in the maps and locations. Odd.
